| 140371 | 2003-04-30 13:43:00 | When virus checking my computer (running Windows ME) it takes over 2 hours to scan all the . cpy files that windows restore has created in the c:\_restore directory . I have turned system restore off but am still left with 1000's and 1000's of . cpy files . Is it safe to delete these . cpy files? If so how do I delete them ? and is there a setting somewhere within system restore that allows me to manage or set how many . cpy files are stored? thank you in advance for your help . . . . JOE . |

| 140372 | 2003-04-30 22:26:00 | They could be just copy files or SQL files. As it is not a fixed known file extension, no one is too keen on telling you to delete them. If you know DOS, then you could change the extension from cpy to old and see if it affects any programs. Then delete after about 4 weeks if all OK. | Pheonix (280) | ||
| 140373 | 2003-04-30 22:46:00 | To disable System Restore: (gets rid of all the .cpy files) Windows Me: 1. Close all open programs. 2. Right-click My Computer on the Windows desktop, and then click Properties. 3. Click the Performance tab. 4. Click File System. 5. Click the Troubleshooting tab. 6. select the box in Disable System Restore, click OK, and then click Close. 7. Click Yes to restart. This disables the System Restore feature and will purge the contents of the _RESTORE folder when the system is restarted. 8 Uncheck Disable System Restore, reversing the above process. |

| 140374 | 2003-05-01 06:57:00 | Thank you all for your help......... I had actually disabled system restore but had not bothered to check if the files remained after I rebooted..... Just one more small question.... If I now turn system restore back on, will .cpy files start to generate from scratch or will all the previous .cpy files be there as well.... JOE. |
