140765 2003-05-02 08:46:00 Hi
My system has decided not to operate. I press the power switch and nothing at all happens.
This happened a few weeks ago and I took it to my local computer shop. Later that day I picked up and they said that it had worked the first time they pressed the power button. The system then ran for 2 weeks without any problems. It has stayed in the same place since I bought it home, i.e. not been moved for any reason.
The system runs a 1ghz AMD chip, 384mg ram, geforce 2 - 64meg ram graphics card. I have never had problems in the 2 years I have owned it.
Any ideas on what could cause the problem.
thanks
Kredo

140766 2003-05-02 09:07:00 Check the power switch on the back of the power supply - it could be off. Next, it could be that the power point decided to die on you. Check the power point with a fan or something to see if that is the problem. If it isn't, then try replacing the actual cord that delivers the power to the PC. wintertide (1306)
140767 2003-05-02 09:38:00 Try physically unplugging the cable from the power supply and then plug it back in again - sometimes I've had to do that to get systems to start. (ATX systems) segfault (655)
140768 2003-05-02 10:00:00 Following this you need to check the power output from the PSU - but I guess you need a multimeter for this. Alternatively temporarily install a differnent power supply unit to see if the problem goes away. JohnD (509)
140769 2003-05-02 13:00:00 Damned if I didn't have a computer with the same symptoms a couple of weeks ago. Turned out that I had to replace the power supply. When it started, all rails were OK. And when it wouldn't start, there was still 5V to start rail. Must have just got a little too lumpy from dried Capacitors. Pheonix (280)

Pheonix - you wrote "When it started, all rails were OK. And when it wouldn't start, there was still 5V to start rail. "
What do you mean by "rails" and where did you check to get the 5Volts?
Thanks

I have no idea either but a couple of threads you might want to look at are here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz).

140772 2003-05-03 03:52:00 Thanks for all the help. I tested off one of the spare plugs and got 0 volts so I replaced the PSU and all is ok again.
cheers
