| 140663 | 2003-05-02 00:06:00 | I just need a utility to lock a CD-ROM drive and prevent it from opening! How can I do that? Reg Tweak? Free Software download? Even a trial coz I just need it for the day today :-) Cheeers Chilling_Silence |

| 140664 | 2003-05-02 00:29:00 | Prevent it from opening? If it's a CDWriter there is a possibility as this has happened with software bugs for CD Writers by thinking the drive is writing so it can't be opened during this process. Still is fixed by a reboot though. You'll have to explain more to as what it's going to be used for, if you still need to use the CDROM then me suggesting to have the power cable unplugged from it is not going to help. |

An ugly way of doing it would be to remove the CD-ROM from its bay and sit it on the bottom of the interior of the case - away from inquisitivie fingers (depends on whether the cables reach that far and how much room there is). A marginally prettier way would be to pull the CD-ROM back into the bay further, and then place a temporary false front plate over the hole. Or just simply unplug the CD-ROM cables. Of course you cannot use it now, but you could copy the contents of the CD to the HDD and run it from there?? |

Of course you could always sellotape the drive up so no one can open the drive for a day or so. | wintertide (1306) | ||

| 140669 | 2003-05-02 02:53:00 | Well I know that Linux has the ability to lock a drive. Not sure if it's possible in Windows or not. Personally I'd whip the powercord out. |

| 140670 | 2003-05-02 11:59:00 | Well.. these PC's are being used.... and we dont want people to take out the CD's and nick off with them (Cyberchuck> Dont try it ;-)) Soooo... The labels are a good deterrent... We catch them before they can actually do anything.. I stopped some genius today from formatting the HDD.. He was in Win Explorer (logged in a guest the nut!) about to click format when I sorta jumped in ;-) |
