140635 2003-05-01 15:54:00 Need to buy new internal modem what is the difference between V90 & V92 and what is good brand to buy. Annanz (3044)
140636 2003-05-01 22:00:00 I can't really help as I use ADSL now.
I prefer external modems but I am an old-fashioned kind of geek.
I would suggested you check out the local store and see what they say. They are pretty cheap nowadays.

140637 2003-05-01 22:14:00 V92 will support "parking" your internet connection when a phone call comes through, but I am unsure of which ISP do or will support it.

Internal modems are just a collection of components that are told by software running on the PC what to do. Accordingly they can be troublesome, as the success or otherwise of their operation is dependent not only on the other hardware in your system, but also other software and how it operates.
They are very cheap, which is their main advantage.

External (not USB) serial modems are more expensive, but have all their intelligence and operation controlled by their own hardware, and are therefore more stable and reliable.

I have had to chuck 2 internal modems and replace with external ones, whick have been trouble free.

Aren't Winmodems a thing of the past? I thought an internal was still a proper modem, just didn't waste time translating to serial and back.
I still prefer external, and yes, not USB. Easier to power off to reset, and you can see flashing lights (great at night with lights out).

140639 2003-05-01 23:40:00 Hi Robo

Winmodems are alive and well (errr... not always well)
There is no such thing in NZ as an internal PCI hardware modem, ISA hardware ones are few and far between, as are the ISA slots to house them.

Some fancy new names though (such as HaM, for Host Accellerated Modem) which is a "winmodem."

USB externals are winmodems in drag as well as far as I am aware, with the added overhead of a USB interface.

Serial RS232 modems are the only "real" hardware modems available.

Having said that, many people have no problem with Winmodems, but when they do play up its a hit - and - miss affair. One of the main symptoms appears (for me and many others) as long "pauses" in data throughput, and I have never seen a cure for that, but it never happened to my external modems.

140640 2003-05-02 05:35:00 Hi

What type of computer are you using. As above, pci winmodems put an overhead on your OS and CPU so it pays to have a little muscle to compensate. If you have an older comp you may be lucky and have an ISA slot in which you can plug a nice USR or Dynalink hardware modem. Otherwise a USR or Dynalink external serial modem is the way to go. external is better anyway but much pricier for a good one.

Look at the costs then compare to setting up ADSL which can run on your voice line without interruption. 1 line no missed calls and fast.

140641 2003-05-02 07:07:00 v92 and v90 are mostly the same. V92 is slightly faster than v90 modem because it lets data transfer more smoothly. Some v90 modems lets you upgrade to v92. yingxuan (3330)
