141302 2003-05-04 07:35:00 Hi there,
I have just brought a X demo PC.
When I got it up and running I expected to have to go though the XP Activation process.Instead I found that it had already been activated by the supplier.
I am wondering if this will be a disadvantage for me if I run in to any probs and need to reactivate XP
There is a "Certificate of Authenticity" attached to the side of the PC,
I understand that this is Activation number.
Is the Activation number tied to the person who activated it or to the PC ?

Thanks
Paul

The Certificate of Authenticity is not the activation number

The activation number generally is done over the internet, and is (supposedly) only tied to the PC - no personal information is passed over. So you shouldn't run in to any problems. However if you do, all you need to do is get in touch with MS in Auckland and tell them what happened and they'll probably give you a new activation number.

141304 2003-05-04 07:44:00 There are 2 different issues here:-
1/ Actuvation
2/ Registration

Activation occurs where you input your number to produce a second number on install. Then from these 2 numbers, Microsoft gives you a 3rd, which is usually known as the "activation" number. It is supposedly only generated by M/Soft.

Registration is where you tell them all your details.

So you have to find out if it is "registered".

You will have to enter your product key number every time you install XP. This number has 25 letters.
When you activate XP you don't need any number. Just click on activate and you will get a respone - activation successful.
