141175 2003-05-04 00:51:00 Hi Jen
Rather than continue on the old thread I thought it best to contact you on what is a separate issue. The story so far:

If you right-click on this mixer box, do you get any options? It does sound like something associated with your sound options. But if it has only just appeared, it could be related to the router - try disconnecting the router connection from the PC and see if anything happens to the symbol.

I have InfraView and I don't recall having any strange additions to my task bar at any stage, so I don't think it is that.

Failling all that, have a nosey at your Start up list using Start > Run > msconfig (enter). Under the Start Up tab is there anything called mixer? There should be a file path listed which may shed more light on it.

Running Adaware would not hurt either - especially since you'll now be zooming all over the net with your fast connection

************

Using the start up list I was presented with a list of 36 items - non of which were 'mixer'.

Ran Ad-Aware 6.0 and got a clean bill of health ! :)

Something which does show some light on it however is that I very recently downloaded "JV16 pt" for cleaning registry and files (which I will approach very tentatively). It says that 'mixer' is "Local ApplWizard- Generated Applications" - Sounds innocuous but is it ?
cheers

141176 2003-05-04 02:05:00 Sorry Misty, but I was talking to Jen at ICE on Friday, and she's gone on holiday to aussie for a week, she left Saturday I believe...

It might pay to <bump> this thread up next friday :-)

And it was good to see you @ ICE :-)

Cheers

141177 2003-05-04 02:11:00 Misty, Jen is unlikely to be online this week. I have sent her the link to this thread to let her know about it, but in the meantime someone else may be able to offer help.

To assist them could you post your version of Windows again and also the list of programs in your Start-Up List?

141178 2003-05-04 03:27:00 Hi Susan (not your real name, I know) :)

My OS is Windows ME

The list of programs in the startup list is:

Taskbar Display Controls
Scan Registry
TaskMonitor
PcHealth
System Tray
Load Power Profile
WorksFUD
Microsoft Works Portfolio
Microsoft Works Update Protection
Key Maestro
Adaptec DirectCD
LoadQM
TkBellExe
QuickTimeTask
AVG.cc
HPDJ Taskbar Utility
C-Media Mixer
CreateCD
Load Power Profile
*StateMgr
Scheduling Agent
SSDPSVR
StillImageMonitor
True Vector
MiniLog
AVGserv9.exe
ZoneAlarm
Webshots
Office Startup
Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar
Microsoft FindFast
WinZipQuickPick
PrintKey2000
Run=

I have just removed Norton Anti-virus which explains why two short of the 36 I quoted. Using AVG nowadays.

Looking at the list again it is probably "C-Media Mixer" ? :8}

I seem to have a hellava lot in my startup list - should I prune drastically ?

141179 2003-05-04 04:06:00 C-Media Mixer is simply the volume control for your OnBoard AC '97 Soundcard.
It does not need to be enabled.

You can still access it at a later date from the Control Panel and adjust some of the settings (Such as Headphones or Desktop speakers :-))

I have disenabled. It seems to me that I would be best to do the same with others such as Adaptec Direct CD and others which i only use once in a blue moon.

As I understand it I will still be able to get throught the start menu but with the advantage that when I power up it will be a bit quicker doing so ?

:)

141181 2003-05-04 05:33:00 ...A bit slower.. they'll load a little faster if you have the things open in your tray, but with the penalty of slowing down your whole system.. normally its not terribly nocticable... but the advantages are not terribly great for most apps... knocking a second off application load time, why bother? That puts it in perspective. It is easy to get over anxious about the wrong things. Will leave as is !

141183 2003-05-04 09:29:00 Hi Misty,

You have quite a lot of items in your Start-Up Menu and it could do with a bit of a prune . All those things are not just loading at start-up but they are also quietly running in the background using up valuable resources so it is a good idea to have as little loading at start-up as possible .

I would advise you go to the Pacs-Portal ( . pacs-portal . co . uk/startup_content . htm#THE_PROGRAMS" target="_blank">www . pacs-portal . co . uk) site and/or Answers That Work ( . answersthatwork . com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist . htm" target="_blank">www . answersthatwork . com) and look up all those items in your list . You can then decide for yourself which ones you wish to disable . There is a lot of good information at Pacs-Portal that is well worth reading . :-)

141184 2003-05-10 13:41:00 Hi Misty

I see the Team has sorted out your Mixer icon whilst I was AWOL :-)

Big sigh .... a lot of catch up reading to do on PF1 ... only another 250
threads to go .....
