140973 2003-05-03 07:19:00 Hi,

I have a system which I have taken NT 4.0 off, and replaced with Win98SE.

It has a 3GB NTFS partition which I (obviously) want to use. How can I get at it? FDISK won't let me delete the partition, what tool do I use?

Cheers,

Erin

140974 2003-05-03 07:29:00 FDISK should let you delete it as a non-DOS partition. Or use Partition Magic. JohnD (509)
140975 2003-05-03 07:35:00 I think that partition magic will let you change it from NTFS to FAT32. There was a free give away on a magazine recently. There may also be some freeware programs which will let you read the partition.

Your best bed would probably be to put it in a NT machine and copy it all. Then format as FAT32 and copy it back.

I think.

140976 2003-05-03 08:14:00 Hi,

I was unable to delete it as a Non-DOS partition...

I tried to delte the primary partition, which I can't do without deleting the extended one, which I can't delete without deleting the logical partitions withthin the extended one.

I can't delete the logical drives as they won't display. Is there a version of FDISK which can read NTFS?

I'll have a look on the net for a useful App. for this.

Thanks,

Erin

140977 2003-05-03 08:40:00 Hi Erin,
You could try the dos text based version of Partition Magic. pqmagict.exe which can be downloaded from here:
www.wcug.wwu.edu

That will delete most partition types.

140978 2003-05-03 20:51:00 Yes... Partition Magic does convert it, however you can run into troubles if you've used NTFS's compression, and sometimes it brings up a lot of warnings about the indexing service stuff.. but you should be fine to convert it to FAT32 :-) Chilling_Silently (228)
140979 2003-05-04 03:47:00 Erin: just boot a Linux install disk and use fdisk. It knows about strange disk formats made by obscure software companies. :D You don't have to continue an install Linux, but it's always a good idea. ;-) Graham L (2)
140980 2003-05-04 10:41:00 Hi,

Partition Magic did the trick, I could delete the partition, and then recreate a FAT32 one using the free space.

Thanks for the help guys - a simple and easy to use utility, highly recommended.

Cheers,

Erin

140981 2003-05-04 12:02:00 Except for the benefit of non-destructive partitioning that you get with Partition Magic, Ive always found that the disk manufacturers make the best disk partitioning software. Ive got Seagates and Maxtors, and both let you do anything you want with the partitions, no matter how they are formatted. Iain Walmsley (3372)
140982 2003-05-05 10:52:00 I like FDisk for partitioning if Im not using Partition Magic!

Nice and simple, but it does the trick!
