1337099 2013-04-15 19:39:00 SWMBO is looking at a computer upgrade sometime soon. Currently she is using an older Dell workstation with Core Duo. I am looking for something:

Non-proprietary
i3 or i5
Asus mobo
preferably non-tower case
gigabit NIC

i.e. I don't want to be buying a Dell or HP etc.

Suggestions?

She mainly uses it for office applications, the odd bit of online gaming (nothing hardcore - mainly java/shockwave/FB) etc

1337100 2013-04-15 20:51:00 Budget wise ???

Do you need a Monitor as well, if so what size, also Keyboard and mouse ?

Building it yourself or want it pre built ?

1337101 2013-04-15 22:17:00 If that's all she uses it for, why a gigabit NIC? Chilling_Silence (9)
1337102 2013-04-15 23:11:00 You could talk to a supplier like computerland and have them build one to your specifications. Then you can choose what ever parts you like. If you want compact an itx system could be a good option.

All modern motherboards I've seen have gigabit ethernet on board. So I don't think that will be an issue.

I know, I know, you'd be hard pressed to get one without, but I'm just curious about why it's a requirement :D

Throw in a small SSD for her main OS drive, then setup Windows to store her Docs / Downloads / Pix / Videos on a larger hard drive for mass-storage. The speed will impress her and win you brownie points ;)

1337104 2013-04-16 02:35:00 No real budget, although under 1K would be preferred

I will be building it myself

I'm just wondering if anybody knows of some good combo deals, or decent and cheap desktop cases
Might have to go to tower if I use multiple HDD's

1337105 2013-04-16 02:52:00 Start with the stuff at pbtech.co.nz -- They're reasonably priced :) Chilling_Silence (9)
1337106 2013-04-16 03:09:00 Bitfenix prodigy itx case is pretty cool, like a short fat mid tower that can take full size graphics cards and multiple hard drives. I'm seriously considering one for my next build. Itx boards are fully featured these days also.

Of course my current case is a storm trooper full tower so most cases look small to me.

Just did a price comparison on a PC Quote I'm building (one of 6 I'm building this week) and not using a dealer account. Excluding any labor or freight costs - phftttttttt Thats all I'll say :p

One thing though, you can get desktop Cases, you dont need a Tower, one that comes to mind. -- Example only: www.silverstonetek.com But they are usually a bit more expensive even than a mini tow due to the fact they are not often used these days.

1337108 2013-04-17 04:28:00 Does she need an optical drive? If not you could look at the i3 Intel NUC. Tukapa (62)
