2013-04-11 03:25:00 | Sooo.... girlfriend won an iPad Mini. I hate iTunes. I'd like to get .MP3 music and a bunch of .MP4 and .MKV files onto the iPad. Can I do this without rooting the iPad and without using iTunes, or is there no way around that? Itunes is such an awful piece of software...

2013-04-11 03:31:00 | Thanks Alex, will have a look at it. Yeah I thought so Chill. :p What's one of those worth? I really don't see the point in having an iPad at all, you can't do anything with them! :badpc:

2013-04-11 03:39:00 | They start at USD$199 I got the 32GB model for USD$249 (Imported straight from Google). Have half a dozen HD movies on there. Just plug it in to your PC and it shows up like a thumbdrive. Simple! :D DSE does the 32GB model for about NZD$399? Harvey Norman does them too IIRC.

2013-04-11 03:42:00 | download VLCstrFree, you can play .mkv files using that! But you will need itunes to add files to the VLC app. And NO, you dont need to sync it with itunes to add the .mkv files. Its very easy. | ronyville (10611) | |
2013-04-11 03:46:00 | You can use HandBrake to convert movies to the right format for the iPad. You can use software such as iFunBox, IIRC, you don't need to be jailbroken for that. Many music players such as MediaMoney should work with it, so no need for itunes. Jailbreaking takes less than 2 minutes, no reason not to do it.

2013-04-11 04:02:00 | Thanks heaps for the suggestions everyone - all these answers kind of prove a point. Something that (I believe) should be dead simple - putting .mp3 files and video files of various differing formats onto a phone/tablet. With an Android device, it's dead easy. With an Apple device, it's a mission. They basically force you into using their own (bloated) software, which is a right pain. Streaming to an iPad is all good - if there is actually a PC there. And what if you want to go away? Also, having to convert .mkv to .MP4 to get it to play nicely is a bit of a pain, although that isn't strictly an Apple thing. .mkv is a perfectly good container, and one of the most widely used these days. Just my two cents anyway. Will look into a few of these options, have a chat with the GF and see what she thinks. :) Chill - what is your experience with 720p .mkv files on the Nexus?
