Horse-race reporting gives the media the collective ability to shape the kind of narrative it needs in order to report excitingly. The increasing interaction between mass media and social media seems only to exacerbate this tendency: both mass-media analysts and private social-media contributors are rewarded for sharply divisive characterisations. We're seeing market segmentation in which a number of players have an interest in keeping the segments at equal sizes."

The way our local media follows this mindless "producing of exciting political races" is also evident - and a sad indictment on last night's TV coverage was the attempt to keep us all on the edges of our seats for what was from the start a foregone conclusion. Or at least, measurable from the early trends of the electoral college votes. And to what purpose did the suspension of scheduled braodacsting serve, other than to enable our local media to give themselves a collective pat on the back, and proclaim how well they did?

Our media needs a reality check, and cease being manipulated by overseas interests. Even in this forum, I note one member who got caught up in the false frisson posted no less than five claps, and in the process demonstrating an imperfect understanding of the issues and what was really occurring.
