Makeup must have been better than I thought! :D He has always been old :) I saw him at the Cambridge Theatre in London in1960, in a Michael Bentine goon type show that had a stage with back projection and cartoon animation. He was made up to look just as old or older than in the Dad's Army series. He would only have been around 40 then.
