1336443 2013-04-11 04:40:00 Streaming to an iPad is all good - if there is actually a PC there. And what if you want to go away?

As I said, there are plenty of options.
I can copy movies (MKV, without converting) to my iPad and play via VLC - not the shitty VLC streamer App, but it has to be jailbroken.

You are nowhere as restricted as you seem to think you are.

1336444 2013-04-11 04:47:00 iPad mini has a good resale value - so if you sell it you could easily get a Nexus

Although you could make a work around for itunes etc and use it you described. It just is a little messy compared to android. You got it for free, nothing to loose. Give it a try, you might like it in the end

1336445 2013-04-11 05:24:00 Have played back a 16GB 1080p MKV file without an issue on the Nexus 7 :)

No sync, no conversion, and they're awesome little tablets too... The 216 ppi of the Nexus 7 vs the 163ppi of the iPad Mini makes a *huge* difference! There's basically no point in having a 720p movie on the iPad Mini coz the resolution is only 1024x768
1280x720 on the Nexus 7 though is *perfect* for 720p video! :D

Wife and I got some good mileage out of ours last time we went on a flight, the battery lasts quite well on Auto-brightness and it was fantastic while I was out and about travelling the south island with work!

Thanks. :)

Edit - out of interest, what media player were you using? I've found VLC beta to be good these days.

1336447 2013-04-11 07:02:00 On Android? MX Player (I forked out for the Pro version to support them) or XBMC... Honestly I used XBMC as my "launcher" for a few weeks, it was pretty damn awesome! Chilling_Silence (9)
1336448 2013-04-11 09:18:00 I want one. The cost appeals, and I'm pretty apple based at home (Iphone + apple tvs).

I seriously looked at a nexus 7, but one of the things I want it for is the odd pdf magazine (books they'll be fine with - I'm happy to read a book on my phone so anything bigger is golden). Thankfully AA have started doing their directions magazine as a pdf download. So I toddled off to DSE and downloaded it on both. The mini was readable - I wouldn't have wanted much smaller. And was quite smooth to view the pdf (this was in safari). Then I sent the book to iBooks and that was pretty good as well.

I tried the nexus 7, and it took me a bit to downlaod it (not knowing android very well), when I got it up the text was ok, a bit slower to render, but the page transitions were quite jerky. I wanted to see a pdf reader/book reader but didn't find one on there. I'd expect that to have been better.

The other factor for me is I've already spent a bit of money on apps for IOS and as much as I'd like to go android I have found that based on the bunch on common apps I use and this includes airplaying to an apple tv spotify and plex) finding workarounds for these is an annoyance I woulnd't have to do with IOS.

A bigger ipad might be nice but not quite as weight friendly for reading.

I see you guys mentioning video players. For a straight video player goodplayer is pretty good. A PC based transcoding one use video stream for file system based, or plex for library based. Goodplayer wll take and play an mkv no jailbreak needed. Either off a network or it can be copied local.

You should try out Plex and get the plugin for XBMC, THAT is awesome!

Does plexbmc support xbmc frodo? I didn't think it did yet.

OT: I'm using rasplex on a pi - awesome.

Yes, I have Frodo on a desktop connected to a TV, with the Plex plugin....works brilliantly..!...also have the XBMCHub plugins....!

Ahh, I believe it's a PI build incompatibility, rather than frodo in general
