1336178 2013-04-09 23:59:00 Like chill I use a "logical" naming system, although since most devices go on separate networks (not just the home one) I name them on groups

Eg Mum's gear is all CAB-xx (eg Desktop CAB-01, Laptop CAB-02 etc etc.) - Works for around the house and is presentable when she's on corporate networks.

My laptop is ECLiPSE, partly because I chose the name a while back but when I upgraded couldn't be bothered changing all the shares and partly because it makes it much easier to find on a network, I know it's mine right away.

At our flat I did it all by NAME_DEVICE eg the DCHP leases are listed as Mike_OSX, Mike_iOS, Sally_WIN7, Sally_WP8 etc etc Again, simple, effective and it works. Of course if people had more than two device eg Mike had a iPhone, iPad and iPod touch it would get messy, but no one does so that naming system is the most effective for this setup.

And like every NAS I've ever run into the NAS is called NAS.

1336182 2013-04-10 07:35:00 Name them after body parts ... see how big a network you can do ... :D fred_fish (15241)
1336183 2013-04-10 23:35:00 I like to give the 'PCNAME' a generic name. That way when that PC is allocated to a new user, I dont have to re-name it.
Generic type login names(eg reception, office1 etc) are the way to go in some cases as well, especially on sites where they have a constant stream of staff leaving & being replaced.

1336184 2013-04-11 00:07:00 Hmmm, my network is named after my street, home PC are what they are, Office (Wife commandeered unit), TV-PC (Garage PC for plasma), TheSAFE (Server 2012 - HOST), NAS, 8-Eight (VM-Media server), MINT (VM-linux), XPP (VM)..

However at work we use NZ, NPE (Napier) 0001 desktop number, FPS/xx file\print server, DBSxx (SQL), GCSxx (global catalog server), PBXxx (PABX, VMWxx (virtual centre), UTLxx (utility server), TERxx (terminal Server), EXCxx (Exchange Mail)

Unfortunately SWMBO ruined the naming convention... but alas I know her computer is due for a rebuild later this year... I'm thinking Trinity ;)
