1310998 2012-11-08 04:09:00 Yes, I thought it saved the need of an actual phone line, the one we need to have plain vanilla adsl, therefore a regular $50 saving a month - no? Sanco (683)
1310999 2012-11-08 04:31:00 Most of the bundles with phone appear to give bigger data caps... Agent_24 (57)

Unfortunately not. Of that $50 you would pay for a regular phone line, most of that goes to the line maintenance and other things, very little goes into the actual calling side of it. They still deliver Naked DSL down that exact same line, so have to charge for maintenance and things of it.

The theory being:
Telecom Phone line cost = $45 (Line maintenance fees go to Telecom Wholesale, unsure of the cost)
Slingshot Unlimited Internet connection cost = $70 (Of this, $25 goes to Telecom Wholesale for ISPs that use them, for the price of a "port", enabling DSL on your line so of this, $45 goes to your ISP)
Total cost = $115 for a regular DSL connection

Slingshot Unlimited naked DSL: $90 (Of this, $45 goes to Telecom Wholesale, for the price of a "port", enabling DSL on your line, so of this, $45 goes to your ISP)
Saving = $25

However some companies also do bundles, in this case Slingshot do it for $111 total for a regular phone line + unlimited broadband

Does that make sense? I think it does :-/

1311001 2012-11-08 09:41:00 To me $88 for 30 gig seems a lot. You can get cheaper, Orcon or Slingshot if you don't mind being off line half the time and slow erratic speeds. I prefer to pay more to get 1st rate service. Part of my living depends on the Internet so I want a reliable service. mzee (3324)
1311002 2012-11-08 09:56:00 Snap have naked dsl and 50GB for $70 a month and very cheap monthly data packs as well howickdota (16941)
1311003 2012-11-08 21:12:00 Long story short:
- with naked dsl, you only have 1 bill to pay. No more telecom phone bill + ISP bill - just one to your ISP.
- it will save you money, but not the $40-50 you were hoping for, more like $20-30.

I'm looking at getting naked dsl too. Sick of paying big $$ for a small data cap + the phone line that I don't use :)

1311004 2012-11-08 21:55:00 The thing is because they also make some money from toll calls, those ISPs that also offer phone services add it for very little cost over and above what a naked plan costs. When I've investigated I've been unable to find any naked DSL plans that offer a worthwhile saving (to me anyway) over those bundled with phone services.

It does make for some amusing stories though, like the one about the customer who couldn't understand why their broadband wouldn't work and reported it as a fault. Turns out they had not plugged it into the wall jack because naked DSL "doesn't need a phone line".

For those that are confused - the broadband signal for naked DSL still travels to your house over the same pair of wires as it would if you had a phone service, it just doesn't connect to the telephone exchange equipment at the other end and so there is no "phone" line and you don't need splitters/ filters in your house.

1311005 2012-11-08 22:39:00 Maybe ISPs should say it doesn't need a phone account or number - that might cut down on the confusion... Agent_24 (57)
1311006 2012-11-08 23:41:00 Snap have naked dsl and 50GB for $70 a month and very cheap monthly data packs as well

A few ISPs offer the traditional phoneline package with +/- 10GB difference data cap for around $75.
I think that if you strike a equally great deal vs a great nDSL deal the difference you save for nDSL is around $20/month. If you make a lot of local calls you may want to check if your calls will be data free if it eats into your data cap.
