1310926 2012-11-07 23:15:00 Can't say I've ever been too keen on Skype.

Joe Average's do seem to love it though.
I cant see them moving across to Gtalk, unless MS really make too many changes, eg force the use of messenger rather than the traditional Skype program.
What are the chances of MS NOT destroying Joe Average's enthusiasm for Skype ?

As I understand it it's happening the other way around, i.e. Messenger is being discontinued in favour of Skype.

Actually most people I know of aren't enthusiastic about it at all, most people I know of hate it but they don't know of anything better.

Similar to the whole "every motorbike should be a Harley Davidson", it's *purely* brand recognition because the name is catchy. Show them something alternative that's actually cooler, and so far in my experience people have been more than happy to use it!

I'm yet to see somebody try a Google Hangout with 3+ people and say "Actually you know what? This is pretty bad, I think I'll go back to Skype..."

1310929 2012-11-08 00:17:00 What annoys me the most is that switching to Skype is going to break my ability to use Pidgin for all my IM protocols in one program.

Skype can work with Pidgin via a plugin, but you have to install Skype as well anyway, which defeats the purpose really.

XMPP still works though ;-)

The problem is getting anyone else to switch to XMPP or GTalk as well

1310933 2012-11-08 03:35:00 I've not really had any issue. A lot of people I know have a Gmail and the majority of people I know of have an Android phone, so it ties in very well and most people don't have an issue signing in to it :) Chilling_Silence (9)
