2013-04-14 08:55:00 | Trying to help a friend whose tethered USB connection from an XP laptop through an LG Android phone to 2degrees is working only sporadically . Have established that it's not a fault in the USB cord, and that my friend is setting it up in exactly the same way as I can through my Samsung Android and my Windows 7 desktop (Settings, Wireless and Networks, Tethering & portable hotspot, and tick "USB tethering") . Works for me every time, not always for my friend; I said "as the next step I'll bring my old XP netbook and we'll try tethering it through your phone in the CBD, where there's a reasonable chance of good reception . If that works, we'll try the same from your home to check it's not a reception problem; if it works with my netbook and your phone at your place it must be something wrong with your laptop (maybe some essential piece of software missing) . " So I try at my home tethering my netbook (HP Mini) to my phone - and it doesn't work for me! Friend says when it doesn't work for her she reboots the laptop with the phone still tethered and it usually connects . But not even that works with my machine . My Win7 desktop tethers fine through the Samsung (in fact I'm making this post through that route with the Ethernet cable disconnected) . But my HP Mini doesn't . Is there something extra needed to enable XP machines to tether reliably through Android phones? Thanks in advance .

2013-04-19 06:10:00 | Further information on what drivers need installing? The manual for the phone is no good; implies everything will happen automatically . I've been seeking around the web . One site tells me to install rndismp and/or rndismpx in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder and to download tetherxp . inf It doesn't tell me where to put that; I put it in the same folder as other * . inf files - though I read elsewhere that you can put it anywhere, even on the desktop . Anyway, none of that made the situation any better . I was then advised to install the XP version of EasyTether, which I did . At least that seems to be trying to establish a connection . But when I turn tethering on on the phone, I get a message "connection failed . Cannot reach the smartphone-side service . Enable USB service in EasyTether on your smartphone . " My "Network Connections" window on the PC now shows "local area connection EasyTether Network adapter", but also says "network cable unplugged" It is securely plugged in (as I said, it works fine on the Windows 7 machine) . I have tried it in all available USB sockets on the netbook, to no avail . I feel there must be one final piece to put in place . Can you, or anyone advise? Thanks .

2013-04-19 08:39:00 | +1 for wi-fi, I find it a whole lot easier. To tether to my samsung galaxy S it had to be set to the right USB mode on the phone and the windows drivers had to be installed - never worked automatically unless I installed kies(proprietary samsung software) first which seems to load the drivers also. Now that I've moved up to the S3 it's a bit easier but I still find the Wi-Fi option better (no need for kies which I don't like). I even go so far to connect my phone via USB to power it but still tether via wi-fi. | dugimodo (138) | |

2013-04-20 02:14:00 | Tried the WiFi route. Got it working - seems very slow, in spite of the claimed "Excellent" signal and 54 Mbps speed. It takes two full minutes to display PressF1's home page. My regular wireless router is much quicker. I'll have to see if it solves my friend's problem. She did mention that another friend tried to set up tethering for her through WiFi "and it worked when he did it" - which doesn't sound very optimistic. I'll recommend she gives the WiFi route another go. Any advice on the low speed? Thanks.

2013-04-20 02:21:00 | That's coz it's your 3G Data speed thats slow. The speed from your phone to your laptop will be fine, but from your phone to your cellular carrier will be *bad*. Can I take a stab in the dark that you're with Vodafone or 2 Degrees? ;)

2013-04-20 05:20:00 | vodafone and 2degrees work pretty well for me. Not as good as Telecom but still fast enough | jonovw (16835) | |
2013-04-20 23:22:00 | It varies by location, at home and work my vodafone smartphone is faster than if I swap the SIM to telecom but at my monthly LAN group I use a telecom T-stick because my vodafone connection isn't good enough for what I use it for (a bit of browsing and some online gaming to fill in the quiet parts of the day, our LAN tends to be an all day event and can get boring). A good thing is a new SIM on prepay is very cheap so it's easy to try both networks if your phone supports them and see which works better for you. Then if you decide to switch it's even possible to transfer numbers between networks to keep your old one. Which reminds me, next LAN I plan to do speed tests on both networks via tethering and then via the T-stick to see if it's viable to switch networks on the phone and use it instead of the T-stick instead of paying two pre-pays every month.
