2003-05-06 04:25:00 | Hi, Can anyone recommend a speedier downloader. I have been tuned up by DAP - an accelerator that said it would speed downloading up by 300% - what a lot of bull. I downloaded their program - and found absolutely no gain--- and to make matters worse found 32 spyware potential files all headed DAP. When I uninstalled it I was asked to explain why I was uninstalling - and when I did, added added a rider that I had found all those spy files. Indignation!!! they"were actively warning all who slandered them etc" I put my money where my mouth is and told them in a very terse matter that I saw what I saw - result! I am now sent to Coventry!! F1 FAQ say some eulogise, some condem-these faster downloaders, to me I am horrified by what I found I download at start- 5.7 slowing to as low as 2.7. A friend in a much younger suburb starts at 16 slowing to 8 Is this because of - say crystallization or something with the older phone lines. I have a 56 k modem effie c

2003-05-06 05:06:00 | Ok first things first, a 56,600 kbps modem has a theoretical maximum speed of 7.8KBps, so ignore anything better than this because you cannot modify any settings that will consistantly guarantee to do better than this. Secondly, this speed is the maximum bandwidth between your computer, and your ISP, so this is spread across any applications you are running that are transferring information. So if you have MSN, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and your file download open, then all of them share in your maximum available bandwidth. Thirdly this theoretical maximum is then affected by various factors such as phone line quality, distance in phone line metres between your house and the local junction, and between the local junction and the next and so on and so forth. Internet traffic also affects the bandwidth available to your connection. Overall, a download that starts at 5.7, and slows to 2.7KBps is not all that bad once everything is taken into account. If you are really worried about it, go to http://www.pcpitstop.com and run your computer through the tests. It will give you an indication of how good your connection really is, as well as giving a few hints to make it better. Iain

2003-05-06 08:51:00 | Hey Stu, can you do us a little favour, please? Don't use the "Quote original" option any more . It is totally unnecessary most of the time, especially in instances such as this one and I have to say that you really do overdo it . :-( If you really have to quote someone just quote the relevant line of text or paragraph, not the whole damn lot . It makes your posts difficult to read, it is very annoying and it wastes space on the server . Please? :-)

2003-05-06 09:09:00 | Thank you Iain/SusanB, I downloaded that so called free program- the only thing I can see is "Modem identified // windows detected and browser" plus two half clocks - The catch - it is only available if I pay I assume US$ 39.95 - which means $80 0dd With the extraordinary amount of spyware I cleaned out adter the so called DAP episode- what will I get sight unseen now? I do not intend to be cynical but have I missed something?

2003-05-06 10:03:00 | Hi Effie, Which program did you download? Flashget? If so, it would pay to start a new thread with "Flashget downloader" as the subject and post your questions in that so that the experts can assist. I can make mine work but I am not an expert on it, unfortunately.
