141626 2003-05-05 14:31:00 Hi all,
I need help from you guys, wondering if someone has experienced the same problem.

Recently, When I connect to the Internet, even when I am not doing anything, there is a pop up which appears on the screen and I can't do anything about it.

It says it's from MESSENGER SERVICE but I don't think so.

I have written down what it says on the POP UP.

"Messenger Service"
"Message from WINDOWS ALERT to WINDOWS USER on 5/5/2003 7:50:13pm
WARNING: YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION IS OPEN TO ATTACKERS!

To STOP messnger Pop-Ups and hackers from invading your system go to www.DESTROYADS.com today!

Destroy all those Pop-Ups and keep hackers and viruses out!
Visit www.DESTROYADS.com now!

WRITE THE WEBSITE DOWN BEFORE PRESSING OK. PRESSING OK WILL NOT TAKE YOU TO THE WEBSOTE.
www.DESTROYADS.com"

then the OK button

I hope this is not from MSN, I think it's from a spy ware or something like that. I tried to use Ad-aware6 to delete these spywares but it's still not gone!!!

I'm wondering if someone could help me!!! I really appreaciate your help, guys!!!

Thanks in advance!!!

Cheers
Phil

141627 2003-05-05 19:39:00 Are you saying that even if you connect to the internet, and just have a blank IE page, it comes up?

It certainly seems dodgy, but weird that it comes up so aggressively.

BTW, are you using IE?

No it really is from Messenger Service, however Messenger Service != MSN Messenger.

Messenger service is one of the services that runs under WinXP (and probably others Ive never checked). It is used for sending administrative notices over a network, however for most people, all it is used for is Spammers sending them crap over the Internet.

If your computer is not on a network, or if you own the network and you still dont know what Messenger Service is, then you can disable it with no problems.

See pressf1.pcworld.co.nz for details.

141629 2003-05-05 23:22:00 Might I suggest a browser that has a built-in Pop-up stopper?

In the past 7 months of using Phoenix (Now being renamed FireBird AFAIK), Ive not seen a single un-wanted pop-up while using it, only when I go back to IE do I get sick of being online due to the larger number of popups on the Web!

Its a great all round browser, and can be downloaded by going to google and searching for:

'Download Phoenix Nightly'

Get the Win32 version :-)

As for that popup - It only deserves to be closed if you see it again :-)

141633 2003-05-06 11:15:00 Hi All
Have done the above, but still occasionally get MSN Messenger chat box coming up and some person (usually female) who invites me to click on a link to some dubious web site (usually porn). OS XP. When I open the chat box, its usually in time to see that the person who sent the message, has "left the conversation". Not that I was talking to them or even invited them to chat. Have blocked all the names that appeared on my contact list that I don't know. Don't even know how they ended up on my list of contacts in the first place. Anyone else getting this.
Cheers

141634 2003-05-06 11:22:00 If you go into the options screen, under the privacy tab you have two lists, one for allow, one for block. If you make sure the "all other users" is in the block list, then that should solve the problem.
