141458 2003-05-05 05:44:00 I am sure I read recently (in pc world) that there is a way to change OE so that file extensions of attachments to email can be viewed.
Also that there was a list of extn names which should not be looked at .
CAn someone tell me which issue or how to do - Thanks

141461 2003-05-05 22:46:00 Potentially, ALMOST anything.

People have even started writing executable code and slipping it into valid JPEG files.
If you dont know what it is or where it came from, then dont open it.

141463 2003-05-06 05:29:00 Like Iain said, consider any attachment as a potential virus, eg Word .doc files can have macros that could do quite a bit of damage. Also Excel .xls files, so just because those extensions look all nice and familiar does not mean they are safe.

If you have an anti-virus program with up-to-date virus references then you can scan attachments prior to opening safely.

141464 2003-05-07 05:11:00 Yes I use AVG . hope that's good enough to catch them - Ta aandhwhite (1165)
141465 2003-05-07 05:15:00 You have touched on what I am after - you say don't open a atachment with .jpg.exe. How do I get the .exe to show - my attachments only show .jpg - ManyThanks aandhwhite (1165)
141466 2003-05-07 05:20:00 Perhaps the safest policy would be to not open any attachments. ;-) Graham L (2)
141467 2003-05-07 05:38:00 If you can see the .jpg extension then if an attached file has a .jpg.exe extension then that will show also.

Probably the reason you cannot see the .jpg.exe extension is because you have not got such a file as an attachment. ;-) :D
