141445 2003-05-05 03:49:00 Question:

If I upgraded my PC to a creative audigy soundcard, DVD ROM drive and a 5.1 speaker system, when playing DVDs (with DD 5.1 sound) would I get dolby digital 5.1 surround sound, if the 5.1 speaker system does not have a built-in dolby digitil decoder?

Any comments...

Cheers

141446 2003-05-05 04:26:00 I think I will answer this question with a question:
If I was driving down the road in my Toyota Levin 1.6 20valve automobile, would I be able to hear the blowoff valves as I decelerate.

There are lots of brands of these available nowadays and start from about $300.

Actually you dont need to bother.

If you get a soundcard that handles 5.1 audio, as the Audigy does, then you dont need another decoder built in to your speakers. Speaker sets with built in decoders, are, eg. for plugging directly into your TV which doesnt have a decoder already. You wont get any benefit buying a speaker set with the decoder built in if you are connecting it to an Audigy card, and it will up the price by a few hundred dollars.

The only other thing with speakers to watch out for, is dont be misled by PMPO speaker ratings. Its not REALLY useful to know that if you feed 1000Watts through your speaker you will kill it. RMS is what you should compare in terms of sound volume.

141449 2003-05-05 06:51:00 Speakers with the decoders in them??? Is this for real?

As has already been explained there is a difference between been dolby digital 5.1 and just being 5.1. and im pretty sure the aduiligy is DD 5.1
