141752 2003-05-06 07:55:00 I'd have to say that in my experience it is best to reformat 98se on a regular basis. Though there are some people Terry being one I think that can manage to keep it going for many years and many configurations without a reformat. -=JM=- (16)
141753 2003-05-06 09:40:00 Hi Joanna

I must be going blind in my old age. Everyone is talking about win98se and I can't spot it in your original post. Need new lenses obviously.

Anyway what version of windows do you have, what are your computers spec's eg, how much ram, hard drive size, video card/onboard graphics ram, cpu type and speed (mhz) and what do you mainly use your computer for (including other family members and programs) modem type and speed if poss.

If you can give use that info as best you can a plan can be worked out ;)

Cheers Murray P

PS. Easiest way to get all that info in one go (apart from Sysoft Sandra) is to go to the Sart button the run and type in msconfig. Check the little box that says advanced or detailed above the right hand pane then expand the list (tree) on the left, click an item (eg. hardware resources) and write down what it says in the left side. Expand the window to get a better view.
Did I get that right folks, going on memory which can't totally be relied on at my age :)

141754 2003-05-06 10:00:00 Murray,what would be your guess as the O/S of a compu purchased in 98? cicero (1379)
141755 2003-05-06 10:11:00 cicero, there is Windows 98 and there is Windows 98SE which was released later.

I have Windows 98, which is the first edition and like Murray, I believe that Joana's version is the same as mine. Her computer is from the same company as mine but four months' younger.

141757 2003-05-06 10:49:00 Hi cicero

My point is why guess, especially when someone is asking for help that may be dependant on the OS . We generally adivise people to tell us all they can re their comps, how have they customised it, what have they changed lately, etc, before we can accurately give them advice . What is different on this thread?

Now to your question . Comp purchased Nov 98 from PC Direct . I'd hazard win98 first ed .

Pauline if you do have win98 (now here I go!) and you can lay your hands on the PC World Plus CD of May 2001, it has the SP1 updates on it . saves time downloading them again . If you can't I wonder whether the nice folks at PF1 would let me burn it for you ;\

141758 2003-05-06 10:49:00 My experience when I did a reinstall of win98se(after being plaegued by a few viruses) is the registry just gets re writtin in the same corrupted way. So I would backup, refomat & if your a net user just spend the money on norton anti v 2003.
But before every thing gets loaded, it would be good to test run the hardware, as it all becomes too confusing when one has to decipher between software conflicts & hardware conflicts.
I would have to say this might be a job for some one with a bit of experience.I was a bit sweaty the first time I reformated. But it was worth it.

Have formatted and reinstalled just twice in nearly five years. :-)

The second time was purely to get that computer online after networking it with this one earlier this year.

141761 2003-05-07 02:09:00 Hi Joanna,
Try the following guy:
soepnel@vectorstar.net

He's only a young fella (18/19ish) but he's very capable. He resides in Hamilton. He'll be able to give you independant advice, answer all your all your questions, and will of course be able to impliment the course of action that you choose.

And unlike the PC stores in Hamilton, he wont charge you an arm and a leg for his services (probably around $50 tops... That's what I used to charge for advising options and reinstalling OS's and programs - normally 5 hours all up at 10 bucks an hour)
