| 141414 | 2003-05-05 10:03:00 | Hi Terry I compared it ($17-) to what I could buy a dsl modem for and figured that they wouldn't be paying full wack so, within a year they were making an additional profit on the modem. Their right as a business, but...... I also didn't like the idea of not being able to fiddle with things too much (which is why they do it that way, right, stop the idiot factor). I guess in the end my decision was in part made on principle, maybe a false one. But thats one of the great thing about having a choice, you can vote :) Cheers Murray P |

Current connection speed is limited to 128kbs/10 gig cap, and it a VERY healthy 128. This is going to change sometime to 258kbs with a $3/month price increase. (Telsra are a tad unsure when, the website doesn't tell either) I NEVER get to see the problems i hear others getting with not being able to get good international speed etc at times, with one exception being when one leg of the southern cross seemed to fall off for the night. I run a FTP server here, telstra don't mind, and the fixed IP is most useful for this. Other than fixed IP it's pretty much what I'd expect to find from a DSL connection. .Clueless |

| 141417 | 2003-05-05 11:01:00 | Never used cable, but my understanding is that if you're on their full speed version (2Mb/s), it's same speed both directions, unlike ADSL, which is assymetric - slower speed upline than downline. I believe it's also subject to the same degredation of speed, depending on how many users are online at the same time. Finally, I would suspect it'd be more reliable than adsl. | Greg S (201) | ||

| 141420 | 2003-05-05 11:16:00 | Ok. Cable Technology allows equal speeds either way, so I mis-assumed that it's what was on offer. ADSL by it's very nature cannot be equal (of course DSL can, at lower speeds). This would make a difference to the posters question, if like me he needs better gaming speeds or does a lot of uploading. Chilly, I don't know of any Kiwi outfit that supplies DSL - they're all based on Telecom's Jetstream, which is ADSL - I get about 600Kb/s upstream, a little below the theoretical maximum or around 800 |

When I enquired back in Jan 03 Telstra told me they no longer offered 128k although it was still offered on their site which is another reason I got a bit miffed with them (+ slow answer of ph calls & email) . I thought their service had deteriorated from what I had been getting from Paradise . Perhaps they are catching up with the existing users like you as your terms come up for renewel .
