142101 2003-05-07 07:02:00 Down on my Windows XP computer, I shoved my former modem in and found that, in fact, it did work (troublesome driver installation had put me off). All I did was click the 'Create a new connection', enter the phone number, username, password, and left it.

Modified it so it used "nz" as the DNS Suffix, because I like that, and if it didn't work, I figured I'd just take that off.

Tried connecting this afternoon, and it worked. Shows the little icon down in the corner... one odd thing was that there were no firewall alerts from ZoneAlarm.

Then I tried going to WindowsUpdate... and it can't find the page. Error about "not being connected to the internet" from MSN Messenger.

It appears that my computer refuses to resolve URLs to IP addresses. I can ping the IP assigned by my ISP, FreeNet, and the server IP. Can't do anything else though.

Just to test this out, I'm going to need to try going to a valid IP, but I'm on another computer at the moment, posting this.

*Side note: I'm being spammed by MSN Messenger "shutting down for maintenance" messages ?:| got about six of them, in one lot of four and two more ten seconds later... three more now*

142102 2003-05-07 07:18:00 Change your ZoneAlarm settings, lower them, check IE etc are enabled for access...

Most common cause of traffic problems out there.

142103 2003-05-07 07:21:00 Try http://210.48.100.45

This is PressF1

If this works, but pressf1.co.nz doesn't, its because your DNS settings are wrong, best to either let them be server assigned, or fixed to what ever your ISP recomends.

142105 2003-05-07 07:45:00 Just humor me here...

Open Zone Alarm, lower the settings, and try again...

Often it will still enforce any of it's messed up settings even if it is disabled. See other threads on firewalls for my rants on ZoneAlarm.

Also check proxy settings:

Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections

Click Lan Settings, make sure nothing is ticked, then highlight your Dial-Up connection, click settings and make sure no proxies are entered and nothing is ticked.

142106 2003-05-07 08:03:00 Uh, I did. By "off", I meant that I had taken down all sliders to "no protection" mode.

And I've already checked Internet Options, there is absolutely nothing viable there.

Also tried switching around which socket the modem cable was plugged into (two available, one for a handset, one for the modem), but there was no difference.

142107 2003-05-07 08:18:00 So what happens when you SURF direct to the IPs?

I have... that's what the "http PASS" parts of the console text implicates.

And now for the big surprise... I'm currently on the internet from the computer that doesn't appear to resolve host names.

Had to manually add the addresses to the 'hosts' file:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 stylus.nz
216.239.33.99 www.google.com

142110 2003-05-07 08:34:00 Urgent request:

Could someone please tell me the IPs for 'download.microsoft.com' and 'v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com' by pinging them?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and 'chat.farr.net.nz', might as well add that.
