142055 2003-05-07 06:51:00 I am trying to set up network with just two computers. At least this time I have managed to load the drivers for my laptop ethernet card.But still no good. When I go to find computer:limprist (on computer A)it just comes up with no computers were found.
Computer A
win98se
Configuration>TCP/IP "the card">properties>IP address 192.168.0.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Identification:
Computer name=Ptoastman
Workgroup=rcatnet
Computer description=p4

Computer B
win98se
Configuration>TCP/IP "the card">properties>IP address 192.168.0.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Identification:
Computer name=limprist
Workgroup=rcatnet
Computer description=compaq

142056 2003-05-07 07:03:00 Wot kind of cable are you using? OK here is what you need. If you have a hub or router or switch board, use "Strait Wiring" ethenet cable. If you are only using one cable from one computer to another, you need a "Crossover" cable. What are you using? JamesStewart (874)
142057 2003-05-07 07:09:00 Yes that's what I'm using,just a crossover cable.
The desk ntwk card is new & the laptop ethernet card is second hand. It would be good if I could some how check my hardware.

142058 2003-05-07 07:14:00 Well, right click on My Computer and go "Manage" and look around for Device Manager" and look at "Network Adapters" or "Devices" and look at the satus of the card. Is Windows detecting what kinda of card it is? JamesStewart (874)
142059 2003-05-07 07:15:00 + try making the computer detect the IP adress automatically. JamesStewart (874)
142060 2003-05-07 07:28:00 In device manager the ethernet card is listed with networkadapters but not with the pcmcia slots & then in other devices is a ! but that's probably somthing else. Ron Bakker (356)
142061 2003-05-07 08:45:00 A ! means the card isn't working properly JamesStewart (874)
142062 2003-05-07 09:06:00 So do I try installing the driver into that location?
I tellya this network thing. Driving me up the wall.
By the way thanks for your time James.

142063 2003-05-10 05:45:00 What do you want to share? folder/s or net access or both?

If you want to share folder/s, file and printer sharing needs to be enabled as well (on both PC's).

And then the folder/s in windows explorer need to be shared.

If you want the networked PC for net access, enable ICS on the main PC (192.168.0.1)

142064 2003-05-10 07:34:00 I will have a look at that.
But I wish there was a way to diagnose wther hard ware is in good order before I drive myself made changing the settings.
I get back after I have had a look :)
