142035 2003-05-07 06:39:00 Oh no....
My pc won't boot up/turn on.
Heres wot happened:
**************
I came home from skool, switchedon PC,, and instead of wot normally happens, it was different.
First, my keyboard and mouse (optical one) lit up (like usual) then my cdrom and cdrw lites lit up - and then, my pc's sytsem speaker beeped twice, then a pause, then 8 (about 8)times again.
My monitor was still blak (yes - it's switched on plugged in etc)
After the beeps - the cdrom's lights are still flasing and the cdroms are reving up (there is no cd in either)

wot i've done:
I've left it going for 10min - nothing - still just keeps doing the same (lites flashing - nothig on screen etc)
reset it - many times, still just beeps and does the usual
switched it off for 20min - same ol'
unplugedd it, left unpluged for a while, try agin - same.....

Points of interest:
This happned about a week ago, when i turned on my pc beofre skool - exactly the same thing happened, EXCEPT there where no beeps from the spker, i turned it off - spent all day at skoll worrying baout it, came home - it worked fine

I'm running Win XP PRO on a Pc Chips M830L motherboard (not even a year old) with a amd xp 1800+ cpu, 256 ddr ram, GF2 MX400.
i haven't added any hardware recently.
same with software - and i haven't changed anything (big) tht i no of.
it was working fine last nite.
my motherboards manual doesn't have anything on troubleshooting or anything about the beeps

um, theres probly more to tell - just can't think of anything at mo (i'll add it if i remeber)
So if anyone no's wot's wtong - please help.
o - and in case u wondering how i riting this - its from family pc.
cheers

142036 2003-05-07 06:46:00 Try and see if you can get those beeps again. Count how many and if they are one after another without (noticable) different silent periods between. The beeps are the BIOS telling you the general area that it see's as faulty.
Post back here and you can bet someone will tell you the direction to start in.

142037 2003-05-07 06:52:00 ok,
first - a few seconds after pressing the power button - it beep's twice - quite fast - not much of a puase between them, then about a second l8er - it beeps 8 times - evenly spaced.

also, another thing - a few days b4 it happned the first time - my pc's clok was stuffed up - it always said it was between 4pm - 6:30pm, no matter wot time of the day it was - i used to always change it - but after a reboot - it would stuff up agin.
i don't think it was a virus - i have NAV - updated everyday nearly - with full scans every month.

142039 2003-05-07 07:41:00 Had a look at PC Chips site and looks like an AMI BIOS. Seems from all accounts it looks like the video card. Try turning off PC, then off at wall, removing Vid card and re-insert into slot. Turn it on again and see if that works. Sometimes they don't line up with the pins correctly, and with a bit of hot/cold, they shift just enough. Pheonix (280)
142040 2003-05-07 07:46:00 it sounds like you've just had a power cut. i would suggest you just try unplugging EVERYTHING (pc & wall) & replugging & try booting it up again. this is what my old pc use to do. Craig (448)
142041 2003-05-07 08:00:00 :(
I unplugged everything - opened up the pc - took out my vid card, and replaced it with an old 4mb AGP card i had lying around, switched her on - and yup - it worked.
I replaced the vid card - put my GF2 bak in, and beep bepp....
i cleaned off the tiny amount of dust on it - still nothing...
so it must be my GF2.
few things now:
Wot mite have caused this?
Any way to get it going again? Anything i can try??
and, how long is a "normal" warranty for a video card?
it miet still be under waranty, i'll have to go thro the records.

142042 2003-05-07 08:46:00 It must be the Ge-Force 2
because Ge-Force 2 has a bios which is displayed Before the computer bios, there must be something wrong with the Ge force bios because you arn't even reaching the computer bios.
i'd
try the GeForce in another computer
and
maybe consider flashing the Ge-forces Bios with the most up to date bios
available for it

142043 2003-05-07 09:03:00 ok.
another thing - when i put in my 4mb vid card, and booted up - my cmos and bios was all weird
teh date had been reset, S.M.A.R.T had been disabled etc
o - also, my FSB had been reset - my 1800+ is now running at 1.1ghz etc

also - is it possible to get new bios on vid card?
is it worth trying it? well i guess it is, how do ya do it then?
i have a - HIS GF2 MX400 64mb with TV OUT
cheers

142044 2003-05-07 09:13:00 Sounds like your BIOS battery is dying too. Might pay to get it checked/measured. Might even be wise to ring your mobo supplier and give him the chance to replace the battery. Actually probably wouldn't hurt to call, then if it packs up after the 12 months, at least you warned them, and should cover you. Pheonix (280)
