| 141867 | 2003-05-06 11:39:00 | Hi. I've been a subscriber for nearly a year now and became one because I found I was buying them every month for a year before that. I now have a largish pile of free CDs and because I - use Windows and - find I have to reinstall it every few months and - I'm lazy and don't record every program I install - etc... I inevitably have to trawl through my free CD catalog trying to find that useful but very elusive application that will save my life. Last time I repaired XP I was asked for my copy of SP1 which, of course, came from the PC World CD - just a little illustration that these CDs are no longer throwaways. They are as important as other installation CDs! Is there anyone out there who has made a list? I did a search on this site and found a link to one that no longer exists (dammit!). Perhaps it would be a clever little earner for PC World to sell a CD wallet every year for subscribers to store last year's copies and include an index (card or CD) that you could use to quickly find the app you most desperately need. |

| 141871 | 2003-05-12 11:48:00 | It's busted! Had thought of an index before while sifting through piles of CD's. Never got round to asking or attempting it myself. A great idea (for someone!). Cheers Murray P |

If I can manage to find out what is wrong I will post again. If not, then commiserations! ;\ |

Its a pity its gone west, as it was a very good idea and well done, it would be good if IDG (PC World) recognised the value somehow to allow such a reference to be maintained . |

| 141874 | 2003-05-12 15:56:00 | I had the same problem finding things for a reinstall, so made up a .doc file called "Reinstall" which lists things I should save to floppies (besides my data files which are backed up to Zip disks), what back-issues of NZ PC World to look in for useful advice, any easily-forgotten procedures I should follow, and which CD-ROMs have the programs I would want to reinstall. Once started, it's a simple task to update this file. And, of course, I print it out and keep it in a file marked "Reinstall" in case it should become inaccessable on my hard drive. This is quite important for me because I'm still using Windows and Office 95 (invalid beneficiary -- can't afford to upgrade), so many of the small applications I use are on old disks. |
