142111 2003-05-07 08:45:00 Not so urgent now...

Thank god for public proxies and Google's cache function.

142112 2003-05-07 09:24:00 OK.. your DNS setting MUST be wrong...

Perhaps if you check with your ISP for the correct ones?

142113 2003-05-07 09:36:00 Well, I must admit, it is set to 'Obtain automatically from server' or whatever that setting is.

How do I find out the IP of my DNS server? Either from within Windows while I'm connected, or, much easier, though fruitless, as I don't think my ISP tells, on the website.

142114 2003-05-07 10:21:00 In Windows 9x Start, Run, winipcfg

In W2k/XP Start, Run, Command, "ipconfig /all"

Your ISP should have them on their web-site somewhere or other... what ISP are you with?

142115 2003-05-07 10:34:00 I would disable Zonealarm from starting automatically and then restart to be really sure its not the firewall plus any popup stoppers and even your AV (just for a test).
Try a different browser if you have one available.
Wipe out your connection under Dail up Networking and create a new one at bog standard settings( you can change settings one by one later, once the problem is solved).
If that dosn't work try un/reinstalling you dailup networking from the Windows setup (Communications) in the Add/Remove programs section in the Control Panel.

142116 2003-05-07 10:51:00 I have two DNS severs, 203.97.99.250 and 203.97.100.3
NetBIOS over TCP/IP says disabled, but I believe it is enabled.
Default gateway is always the same as my IP address, don't know if that's normal or not.
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.255
DHCP is disabled for some reason.

Only other two connections are to do with IPv6.

No antivirus software, ZoneAlarm never caused problems before, and I've even gone through the list of services and enabled ones which sound remotely like they play a part in finding compturs over a network.

142117 2003-05-08 09:10:00 Continuing on...

anyone know IP/ports for NZ public proxy servers that I won't get charged for using?

Even if it's Xtra's or Orcon's or something. As I'm going along the basis a proxy in NZ should give me faster request times. If it supports SOCKS, hey that's great.

Haven't managed to solve my problem. Deleted the dialup account, took off all networking settings, uninstalled network card, took off my DNS suffix, uninstalled most network services... rebooted, added on the basics, and it still doesn't work.

142118 2003-05-08 09:59:00 Whats wrong with your own ISPs proxy?
I haven't heard any complaints about clear.....
(i assume they are your ISP because they own the IP adrresses you are using for DNS)

142119 2003-05-08 20:07:00 Clear? That's interesting, as my ISP, stated at the start, is FreeNet.

Anyway, what's wrong with their proxy? Well, I can't exactly find out it's IP address as ping doesn't work.

142120 2003-05-08 21:31:00 This is a very long shot and I don't even know what I am talking about so if it is complete rubbish, that is why! :D

Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and double click on DNS Client .

If that service is not running, start it up and see if it makes a difference .
