2003-05-06 11:22:00 | A friend unfortunately has Win Me and it is now crashing. Word and Outlook Express are giving dll errors, mouse is locking up, internet will not dial. There are no doubt other problems as well as this has only been described to me by phone. Have tried a scan disk and defrag and will try a registry restore but problem started a week ago so I will be lucky if there is an old enough copy. Has stopped all start up programs via msconfig. Is up to date with Windows Update and Nortons. Thought Id ask here if anyone has any ideas before I format the thing and start again. It only has a restore CD. I have had little to do with Me so is there something I am missing? Give me Win2k any day. | Berryb (654) | |

2003-05-06 11:38:00 | What I suggest is try reloading win me, that will fix most of the problems, if that does not help, then you will need to reformat, rembere to backup the important data. | stu140103 (137) | |
2003-05-06 11:41:00 | try 98 SE or XP or 2000 if you can; Win ME is well known for its bugs and lack of support from Microsoft who used it as a quick marketing exercise to bring in extra revenue

2003-05-06 12:03:00 | Thanks for the info. I was thinking about putting 98se on it if I formatted it. As for reloading Win Me I thought you don't have that option with a recovery Cd. Does it not just restore back to the original state when purchased or can you do the reload option without losing the registry and system files? I've only done one reinstall with a recovery CD before and there was no option to reload the OS. | Berryb (654) | |
2003-05-07 02:35:00 | Win Me recovery allows you to restore to a previous stase. If a previous state has been saved. It is alleged to work sometimes. :D I believe there is a patch which makes it work. | Graham L (2) | |
2003-05-07 03:47:00 | Don't be so quick to knock Win Me, folks. I have been involved using it on 5 computers in various places (2 at home) since its release in NZ - it has been very stable and forgiving of operator mistakes. I have had it crash only once, and the system restore facility worked perfectly. To go back to the original post, if there hasn't been too much mucking about since the problem started see if there is a suitable restore point and try it.
