142534 2003-05-08 23:02:00 I have a HP Pavilion 8624,Win9X,20 hd,256 RAM and want to upgrade to XP,bigger hd,faster CPU etc.Where do i go,who do i c?? What is the cheapest option? The thing keeps freezing and this will stop me pulling my hair out! br0nwyn (3755)
142535 2003-05-09 00:31:00 I have an 8524, running XP.
Runs very well indeed, never gives a problem. It has proven to be very reliable.

It now has 2 x 40 GB HDD fitted. I also scrapped the rear chute and fan, fitted a heatsink/fan combo and its very quiet.

Original 667 P3 is fine, I think you can go higher but unsure. You cannot go above 256 MB of RAM on that model, I am aware of that.

On XP the original modem will not work, and will lock the system. Throw it as far as you can. It wasn't that great on W98 either, its a cheap winmodem. I used an external serial modem.

As to the machine freezing, the original Windows 98 supplied was not the most stable of operating systems. I went to ME, which was better, then to XP.

The machine is not used by me now, but is regularly used by another person on the Network here.

142536 2003-05-09 01:43:00 I was looking at upgrading my 8624 a couple of weeks ago, and got a great deal of information from the HP techs at their website.
The most memory that can be installed is 256MB (2x128).
The motherboard will not support a processor above 750 Mhz.
In the end I decided it wasn't worth the effort, so spent $1800 on a 2.4Gkz Pavilion and turned the 8624 into a firewall/backup facility.

142537 2003-05-09 02:46:00 Upgrading can sometimes be more expensive than buying a whole new system. I would find some really smart computer whizkid around your area to build you a computer at a reasonable price. It's how I got into computers was from friends and family.

Check prices on www.pricespy.co.nz for individual prices on parts, fax/email your nearest computer supplier and see if they are willing to match their prices.

I highly recommend www.e-one.co.nz (yes I'm advertising them) if you are in Auckland as they have been great with cutting prices on me. I don't think it's because I have a VIP+ Account with them either but it might be that.

142538 2003-05-09 09:58:00 My suggestion would be. Send me your old computer @ go buy a brand new one for yourself, easy. Poppa John (only kidding) Poppa John (284)
142539 2003-05-09 10:01:00 Seriously tho. How about buying the Tower Tin Box only, for the upgrade & use your existing Monitor etc ? Poppa John Poppa John (284)
142540 2003-05-09 13:48:00 H/P are notorious for being hard to upgrade, small power supply lack of room , onbard graphics ; incompatible parts etc easier to sell it and get one custom built like all my Pcs are its cheaper and you can select the best parts that you need without all the extras that they charge you for. kiwibeat (304)
