142407 2003-05-08 07:49:00 Hi - Ive Windows XP home. Ive been told that I need to delete my temp internet files. If I do what effect will this have and what do I lose? Ladybug (3129)
142408 2003-05-08 11:07:00 you won't lose much. the internet may seam a litle slower untill the comman pages are stored in the cache.

while you are at it check the size of the cache. with most browser i like to keep it set to about 40meg.

142409 2003-05-08 12:31:00 a few questions for ya on this topic.
we talk about temp internet files a lot but i am a littles lost as to wot they are.....

what are temp internet files made up of mostly?

when deleting them do we rid ourselves of the whole file?

and im presuming that these files are not critical to the running of the puter?

so why do we collect them or how do we collect them?

and yes im gonna reread the FAQ on temps.....

Every website you view is downloaded and stored onto your PC.. In a Temporary Internet Files folder :-)

Of the MANY files that may be acumulated actually :-)

Nope - Not at all!

> so why do we collect them or how do we collect them?

Well, they speed up the downloading of pages... like google.co.nz, its pretty much the same, Day in.. Day out.. except when they celebrate Einteteins BDay and the likes.. Firstly your browser checks to see if the stored page is older than the one online.. if the one on the web is newer, it'll re-download the page.. if not then it'll load it locally, saving you time/bandwidth.

142412 2003-05-08 13:19:00 No, I doubt they would do anything except fill up your DD if you didnt set a reasonable limit. Mine is currently 20 megs on the Famil'ys PC coz of they amount of surfing they do, however I only visit google, PF1, and a few other sites, so mine is set to 5 megs! Chilling_Silently (228)
142413 2003-05-08 20:39:00 Mine is set at 1192mb - what is this in meg? Ladybug (3129)
142414 2003-05-08 20:46:00 That is in Megs, its over a Gigabyte set there.. but bear in mind that it may not be full... try clearing it (It may take a couple of mins at that size) and setting the limit to something a lot lower.. 50 would suffice :-) Chilling_Silently (228)
142415 2003-05-08 22:01:00 I have always wondered what the difference is between memory cache and disk cache. Can someone please explain? I currently have my memory cache set to 4096 kb and my disk cache set to 50,000 kb. Should I change them both to around 5000 kb? Your comments would be most welcome.

That is 1,192MB which is megs, like Chill says . That is WAY too much, change it to no more than 200MB, or much less if you don't surf that much . Then empty your Temp Internet files and start afresh .

Beetle: As the others have said, the Temp Internet files just speed up your web browsing . Your browser has a set limit on how many MB of files that it will store and when that limit is reached the older, unused files are just "let go", ie deleted . There is no "pressure build up" .

So, when you browse PF1 everyday your pages will load a bit quicker if the graphics are already stored in your cache (a holding space on your hard drive) than if your browser had to download the graphics on every visit .

It is a good idea to keep the cache size as small as you can because if it is really large, like Ladybug's one is right now, then it will take longer for the browser to search for and fish out the correct graphics in the huge cache than it would to just download them if your internet connection is as slow as mine is . Like Tweak'e says, 40MB is a good size but if you visit lots and lots of different sites everyday then you might want it set at 200MB . Ladybug's 1192MB is WAY too much . You also asked about disabling temp files - you can do that by setting the size to 0 but that is not necessary and would really slow down your browsing . Temp files are your friend as long as there are not too many of them .

Apart from having a "spring clean" the main reason you would want to delete your Temp Internet files is to try and solve problems that you are having with your browser . Some people's main reason is to get rid of evidence of "naughty" browsing . ;-) :D

It is not necessary to delete your Temp Internet files all the time but to delete them, close Internet Explorer then go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General > Delete Files .

To change your Temp Internet files cache size click on Settings and type in the size you want . If you want to see what these files look like click on View Files and have a sniff around in there .

While you are in the the General section you can also delete your Cookies if you wish (as long as you remember your passwords to forums, etc) and clear your History . Make sure your Days to Keep Pages in History is set to no more than 5 days (mine is 2 days) to keep that trim as well .

Hope that clears up all the mystery for you . Now let me do some work!! :p :D
