Have a look where these massive files are coming from then get back to us. 5G is fine to run ME and a few apps, and don't listen to what people are saying about your partions, use what ever works for you. 1. Have you disabled system restore or limited the space it uses yet? 2. how much do you have set aside for internet explorers cache? 3. How big is your virtual swap file? Are you letting windows manage it or do you have it fixed? |

2003-05-13 02:48:00 | I believe that ME's System Restore is allowed to use only /12th of the "disk space". That would mean that it can use up to 5/12 GB on the C partition. Which is probably not enough for it to work. :D | Graham L (2) | |

2003-05-13 03:28:00 | Thanks Roofus - I'm at work at the moment so can't answer your questions - chances are that my answers will be the wrong ones - my pc skills are about as simple as turning it on and hoping the thing does as it is expected - which definitely isn't the case at the moment. Will print this tread off a take it home with me an have a look for the answers and log in and let you know. Cheers

2003-05-13 07:05:00 | Hi again - have disabled restore (do I need to have it running?). Opening of emails and even a jpeg is still really slow - 40secs to open a jpeg of around 100k - surely with 511m of ram free and now 653m of space it should be a lot quicker?

2003-05-13 08:49:00 | There may be plenty of copies on the p2p networks, but that doen't mean that you should be using them. (I'm the first to admit that I'm not perfect - but I still think that you should pay for s/w unless the company makes it available shareware to try, or freeware) | nicnz (2273) | |
2003-05-13 14:33:00 | How much physical Ram do you have installed!!! How big is your Page file??? if the page file is too large it will slow down the operation of your PC. It should be kept at the default and if possible (not sure if ME supports this) move it off your OS partition.

2003-05-13 23:10:00 | Hi ya Marshall - total RAM is 526M - of which there was about 511 free last night. As to the page size - I'm sorry but you have lost me there. I downloaded all 11M of ME and IE6 upgrades last night - big difference this morning - almost like a new machine again - email was quick to open - as were the couple of jpg's that I tried - and Bejewelled was as though it had a strobe light on it before - now is really quick - maybe that was it - too big a restore and an older version of ME. Thanks everybody for you tips - I will still work through them so as to continue trying to get the optimum out of the "beast" Cheers Folks
