142626 2003-05-10 09:17:00 In Win ME to reinstall the Dialup adapter you need to delete the ISP dialup connection and create a new one. Jim B (153)
142627 2003-05-10 10:44:00 Thanks Jim B, worked a treat - I'll have the other machine back on line soon - I hope !! Curly (487)
142628 2003-05-10 23:24:00 Help - this is getting to be a pain in the ass.

Re-installed Dial up Networking and the Networking portion in Control Panel now showed exactly the same settings as another computer which works fine. So I am happy the it is installed correctly.

Re-installed the modem (Speedcom 156SP), checked control panel/modems. It was detected, software installed and a diagnostic check gave a good report.

Went into control panel/ system/device manager and it lists two "modems", the Speedcom as a Generic HCF PCI modem and a HCF modem WDM/Conexant PCI modem enumerator. If I remove the modem enumerator that action takes out both "modems".

Regardless of this if I dial PressF1 the modem says on screen it is connecting but if I pick up the phone - no dialing is taking place.

Being crafty, I move the modem to another computer and after ripping it's modem out, I put the Speedcom in - the end result is it works fine.

So the problem, whatever it is is with the computer - but what ?

Someone wrote about the two "modems" being listed, but sorry I cannot see your post at present. What was significant about the modem enumeration being listed ?

142629 2003-05-11 00:05:00 Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the ISP connection icon and choose Properties.
At the bottom where it says "Connect using" select the correct modem in the box.

142630 2003-05-11 06:12:00 Thanks Jim B, tried that, but still on clicking connect, the modem says it is dialing, but picking up the phone shows no sign of the modem dialing at all. It all ends up with error 630.

Perhaps as Tweake suggested the modem is on the way out. Tomorrow I will swap a known good modem from another computer and see if IT will work in the faulty machine. Computers are SUCH fun, as they allow one to spend hours fiddling yet getting nowhere. :-)

142631 2003-05-12 11:03:00 I might be on to something here - is it possible to remove/delete com1 and com2 and re-install them, much like the Dial up Adapter.

I had a program that needed to use a com port, not a modem though, however it cycled through com1 to com9, then reported that a com port was not detected. Looking at the data provided through control pane/system/device manager shows nothing amiss, but I suspect it's simply not telling the truth. This would explain why the modem reports everything OK but then the com port fails to actually dial out because it's faulty.

But what about the virtual com ports, I presume they are com3 and up, how are they reset?

Maybe I am on a wrong track but.......
