142598 2003-05-09 04:15:00 You should do the scan during a time you don't require using your PC like when you're aslept or out partying, unless of course you like sitting there watching the progress bar which I admit I've done a few times :P

Hopefully the scans don't require interaction as that can be annoying.

142599 2003-05-09 04:16:00 Thanks - I might get a copy of XP (in order to get my writer working) - save everything to CD and start from scratch by reformatting into Fat32 and loading ME and partition with only four or so - my fault I suppose for buying a "flash" HP Nomad1 (3546)
142600 2003-05-09 09:25:00 How often are you planning on scanning them?

A surface scan will take ages, but that should be a monthly event at most.

142601 2003-05-09 11:47:00 You say there are some partitions you aren't using at all?

Use Partition Magic, delete one of the partitions and increase your C partition with that now free disk space.

142602 2003-05-11 23:15:00 Powa - cheers - is Partition Magic a free download from somewhere?
I don't have a problem with the size of the "C" drive - the problem is finding out what keeps filling it up - there shouldn't be anything on there that can fill up hundreds of Megs in a couple of days and cause the pc to run slower than a commodore 64.

142603 2003-05-12 06:05:00 No, Partition Magic is not free .

If it were me I would be doing as you said a few posts ago - a complete repartition, reformat and reinstall . It will take a bit of time to do it but will be quicker in the long run, what with all the futzing around you are doing at the moment trying to fix things .

The big bonus is that your PC should then run oh-so-sweetly . :-)

142604 2003-05-12 07:14:00 Partition magic is your best bet if you are going to format. It'll let you do it safely *cough* The filesharing p2p networks have plentiful amounts of version 8.

I think your pc might be disappearing in hard drive size because you might not have enough ram and windows has to rely on the swap file all the time. Hence why you would have low hard drive space. It may pay just to reboot often. But I don't recommend that, have a look around for FreeMemPro (p2p again) and that will help things.

142605 2003-05-12 07:20:00 And as someone else said earlier, definitely check WindowsMe's system restore and turn it off. Then reboot.

I used to use windows Me and the system restore was using up 6Gig one day. Get a real restore programme like GoBack :)

Right Click My Computer, click on System Restore Tab and turn it off.

142606 2003-05-12 07:31:00 10 gig for C if you are runing ME. My better half (Dyan) runs the tidyest ME system, and can't keep it under 5gig

System restore uses alot of space..I think its worth it, but you'll need more than 5 gig, unless you can tell it to put the back up on a "spare" partition????

142607 2003-05-12 23:21:00 Thanks all - have a few 'leads' to work on now - so hopefully things should be right soon.
It would be nice to get it back running as sweetly as it should
