142351 2003-05-08 22:02:00 Is your router explicitely added to the trusted/local zone? Ive been using ZA for several years now, and the only fault Ive found with it is that its not very good at determining for itself whether an address is local or Internet.

And of course if you get ZA Pro, you even get to redesign your own security levels.

142352 2003-05-08 22:35:00 Umm........

Sorry robo, I should have mentioned that I am using V3.0.134. I have stayed with it because it works fine and I heard bad vibes about later versions, so I was waiting for the dust to settle.

For all that, IP addresses are held in the Firewall section and are easily changed. Local zone and Internet zone are separate and unless password protected, anybody can change or remove the restrictions.

Take a poke around and you should be able to resolve your problems. It isn't exactly intuitive, but the Help files are reasonably good.

Cheers

142354 2003-05-09 00:18:00 The interface is just so weird, I'm not sure it is worth the effort.
If a complete geek can't find it inside of a minute, then it's too hard.

142356 2003-05-09 01:46:00 Me too, its been a wee while since I used the standard edition.

I know that a lot of people dont like ZA because you have to manually set up the local zones. Mum's work tried using it a few years back and gave up for the very problem that Rob is having.

Once you set it up, it works a treat.

142357 2003-05-09 06:09:00 I got rid of it for two reasons...

a/ it didn't work properly :)

b/ too many alerts. I want a firewall to catch things and stop them and NOT tell me about it... ZA wouldn't do this - if you told it to not tell you about it, then it flashed vigorously in the system tray (which was flippin' annoying).

142358 2003-05-09 12:43:00 I used to use ZA but kept on having connection problems with my ISP (who told me to disable it!) Older versions now.

Switched to Outpost and don't even notice its there. It keeps nice logs, if needed, and seems to work well without flashing up warnings 6-8 times per day.

142359 2003-05-09 14:12:00 I am using the free Zone Alarm with ME & the pro version with XP Home.
At first I had trouble with my Mail & also being cut off line.
The Mail problem was cured by deactivating the Norton 2003 Mail Checker. Zone Alarm caught a Virus despite this!

The second problem was cured by placing my ISP in a Safe Zone with full access. Seems that the ISP pings the connection if it is quiet, & if there is no reply it disconnects.

zonealarm dosn't "catch" virus's (it "catch's" certain attachments virus or no virus). thats what the antivirus email scanner is for. zonelabs recommends turning the ZA mail protection off as it can conflict with antivirus email scanners.

robo- your werid :p ZA is the easiest of all the firewalls to use. i suggest putting your geek glasses back on ;-) lol.
i'm not familair with broadband connections but you should be able to add the router ip addy to it (and ip addy for any heatbeat depending on provider if required).
