It can remap bad sectors to other good sectors. This means it would slow down the drive by having to move the heads all the time. |

2003-05-10 01:33:00 | I Reinstalled as many drivers as I could find and Updated/Flash the bios with the latest I could find from Chaintech. No difference, still slow. Would it be a smart thing to try the hard drive from my P3 ME Comp in my new P4 XP Comp just to establish that the hard drive really is the problem, I'm concerned about causing problems in the new comp. I hope somebody is still watching this thread. Thanks for the help so far. Ian

2003-05-10 12:02:00 | Hi Ian What brand/model of drive is it? Many of the manufacturers have disk utilities and diagnostic programs eg. Seagate Seatools and DiskWizard. They might give you a better idea of whats going on. HTH Murray P

2003-05-10 21:46:00 | It sounds like you need to run powermax (www.maxtor.com) program from Maxtor. Read instructions carefully as improper use can result in data loss. Backing up important files is a good idea as it sounds like your hdd is the problem. cheers Steve

2003-05-11 04:38:00 | Try SiGuardian (assuming you have a S.M.A.R.T utility built in and enabled in BIOS) | Greg S (201) | |
2003-05-11 05:10:00 | Try the driver in another box and benchmark and compare it to the box you are currently on Consider also the cable and interface on the machine as potentially having problems [with cable being more likely].

2003-05-11 08:01:00 | I ran the Powermax program about 2 weeks ago but I chickened out when it said I might lose data. I'm not worried about the data as I already have that on my new Comp, but at that stage I had just Clean reinstalled all my Apps and I didn't want to corrupt anything because I had hopes that I might fix the problem, so at this point I'm keeping that option as a last resort. Thanks for the help Steve because I would be really pissed if I reinstalled a new disk at about $200+ and then find it wasn't the problem. It is only about 2years old and hasn't had a hard life. | 142238 | 2003-05-11 08:19:00 | I'm going to remove the drive and try it in my new comp but I probably wont get this done until next week as I have other work to do. I'll keep you guys posted when I have some results. Thanks everyone for taking an interest. So far its not fixed but I've learned something. Ian
