142341 2003-05-08 04:49:00 I just installed the new ZoneAlarm from a PCW CD (see, use my own product, that must be a good endorsement).
But it seems overly aggressive. It had denied DNS lookups from my ADSL router without asking and seems to be unwilling for me to stop it.
I also wonder if it has reduced my ability to connect XP to a local NT4 domain (long story, don't go there right now).
I am wondering if I should just say "bollocks" and get rid of it because it doesn't seem to stop any spyware, certainly doesn't stop popups, and just is a general pain in the nether regions.
Am using the Nokie M1122 router (as most people probably already know, I seem to mention it every second day).
Any comments or suggestions? Should I say stuff it and get rid of it? I am sorely tempted.

142342 2003-05-08 04:52:00 Im sure you can allow it to let anything pass that's headed across a LAN, or to a specific IP.

I personally am surfing Firewall Free... Not a good thing.. but yeah, I used ZA a while back and Im sure you can!

Now how you do that is another matter entirely ;-)

Cheers

142343 2003-05-08 07:26:00 I also find Zone Alarm not to my taste.
Find a combo of SpyBot,AdAware and Admuncher quite good.

142344 2003-05-08 07:45:00 Robo,

Why don't you get more of those Symantec products up for grabs at PressF1 and win one for yourself - get a real firewall like Norton Internet Security (thanks PressF1 - it's brilliant!)... I installed ZA once - lasted about a week; I got sick of the stupid thing. After that I used Tiny, Kerio, and Outpost, all of which I fully recommend if you're after a free one, but I'd never recommend ZA.

142345 2003-05-08 08:11:00 Hi robo

Just change the permissions each time a wanted address is blocked. After a short while most of your favourite sites requiring automatic two way communication will have been enabled and everything is soon back to normal.
ZA call this process "learning" or somesuch name and the demands taper off as your preferences are recorded. In essence, the default from installation is "block everything."

I'd rather have a firewall that initially trusts nothing than one that opens the door for anyone who knocks.

Ad blocking doesn't cause me any problems, but pop up blocking stopped the PF1 emoticons and one or two other desirable intrusions from other programs so I turned it off. Similarly the mobile code features can stop access to some PDF file pages (go figure!) and other features stop on some sites.

I find it easy to leave it set conservatively (more protection) and turn off odd features when they intrude. In fact, if blocked on a specific site I more often than not just shut it down while I access my wanted data then restart it before I move on. Takes seconds only.

There may be better firewalls, but who's to say they don't have similar quirks and ZA does everything I want.

Cheers

PS Thomas: You have no firewall type protection at all so your policy would seem to be "let it all in and clean up later". Trouble is, you don't know what those programs have been up to between times and there is nothing to stop them calling home without you knowong.

Do not be so hard on ZA, Some people have problems with it some people do not, we where a happy ZA user, before dad instilled win XP... (a story they ;))

It is like any Programs some work of some people & some do not for others.

That is my 2 cents for the night :D

142348 2003-05-08 20:47:00 It used to work fine, but now overnight it has decided to completely block my access to 192.168.1.254 (the router) and I have had to turn it off again to get access to the web.
This new version is a bit of a pig, I have to say. I can't see any obvious way to get the thing to open that back up.

142349 2003-05-08 20:55:00 I couldnt either, and so I found a 2.6 version on the web somewhere...
Does the router not have protection built into it?

142350 2003-05-08 21:29:00 Pretty sure it does, but paranoia takes over sometimes.
