142261 2003-05-08 01:29:00 Hi
I am running Win XP home Ed, on HP pavillion 1.8Ghz, 384Mb ram, 40Gb hardrive with 28Gb free.

I am finding when playing some games that i get the error message low on virtual memory. I have tried tweaking this several different ways, even checking system managed size! but still get error. currently i have
minimum 2mb(cant change this) initial-571mb, max 1500mb. could someone tell me any better settings.

Thx
Richard

142262 2003-05-08 02:34:00 Try 'Let Windows manage my Virtual Memory' and see how it goes.

If it does increase it, then there's not much you can do about it. You may wanna see about a RAM upgrade, if you're doing lots of gaming etc. then a little more might stop it.. but then again, I have 512MB RAM, and running Day Of Defeat (Half-life mod) it would always try and increase the virtual memory, even though there was over 300MB RAM un-used!

Soooo... What games are you playing as well, coz I was using 3.1 Beta of DoD, and they've just release 1.0 Final, which supposedly fixes that, so you may want to download the latest upgrades for your program :-)

Hope this helps

142264 2003-05-08 09:01:00 Try this:

Increase your pagefile to about 2000mb+ as the maximum and choose to let Windows manage it. (you have 28gig free so no worries!)

Next it might pay to have windows clear the virtual memory pagefile on shutdown. This will allow you to start up with a fresh swap file everytime.

Start -> Run -> type in: gpedit.msc
Expand in the tree column: Computer configuration + Windows Settings + Security Settings + Local Policies + Security Options.

Now scroll down to "Shutdown - Clear Virtual Memory pagefile" and enable it.

It may take longer to shutdown the system, but may improve some other things.

142265 2003-05-08 09:02:00 By the Way:

384ram is heaps for games as well. I have that and run games just fine. in fact the computer still has over 128mb ram free.

142266 2003-05-08 09:48:00 Just modifying PoWa's idea a little:

Try setting your pagefile to 1024mb minimum AND maximum, and don't let Windows manage it. That way the page file stays the same size (cuts down on fragmentation, and increases speed), but should be ample for what you want to do. If this doesn't work I'd suggest there is probably a software issue that might need to be resolved (either through reinstalling the game, or checking for and applying any updates and patches for the game.
