In some ways, yes, it is, yet in others - it isnt.
Although, you must realise that IE 6 is now what a lot of sites are primarily tested on, seeing as WinXP ships with it, and for a myriad of other reasons.

There are some advantages to both :-)

Hmm... Im assuming you're talking about Windows Updates. It all depends really.. some people will download them, as they are security fixes for Windows which fix holes that might allow a hacker into your PC, but the reality of anybody actually hacking into One PC in a million... and knowing that you havent plugged 'Security Fix xyz' is not very likely, yet some would rather not take the risk.
There are also down sides to this, as Windows XP SP1 has been known to slow down certain PCs...
All in all, its up to you :-) Just remember that it will take time to download the updates, as there are many coming out.. you're better off getting Windows XP/2K (Depending on your OS) Service Packs!

Removing Internet Explorer.. not really worth it. Im not sure if its actually fully possible, seeing as its based on certain components of Windows that can not be removed... in theory you could get rid of IE, but quite simply its not worth the worries.

As for Add-on's, depends on which ones you've downloaded, as Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel is probably your best stop!

Hope this helps

Cheers
