142895 2003-05-10 12:19:00 Hi all. I uninstalled the Q811349 (or somthing like that) patch that has been causing problems and restarted the computer and now it says that the file "ntoskrnl.exe" is not there or is currupt. Firstly, I can't remember if I have SP1 (:| XP Pro here) and second, how to I renew the file. I can't boot is safe mode, I can only put the XP CD in the drive and go to recoverly console (which I have no idea how to use). Umm, I am pretty sure I have SP1 so if i use the ntosknl.exe off the cd, it wont be compatible. BTW: I havn't been muking around with the boot screen, so this isn't my fault. JamesStewart (874)
142896 2003-05-10 12:55:00 You're right about going thru with the Install, but you DONT want the recovery console, choose the other option instead and it should do something pretty much like a Windows Re-Install, only it's keeping logins and settings etc.

Hope this helps

Cheers

142897 2003-05-11 05:55:00 Okay two solutions to try off the top of my head

1. Boot Windows XP CD > recovery console > when logged in type fixboot and fixmbr

IF that fails

2 . Boot Windows XP CD > install windows [Trick Question] > in the next menu choose repair windows

The patches are Not meant to be uninstalled. The ideas of the patches are to be instilled & left alone.
