142830 2003-05-10 07:02:00 Hi ya.
I'm in the market for a new video card.
I currently have a GF 2 MX 400 64mb on a XP1700, 256mb Ram (soon to be 512) pc.
I have had my GF2 for 2 years now, and i think its time for an upgrade.
Anyway, i've been looking at those new GeForce FX's.
The cheapest ones i've seen are the GF FX 5200 128mb for about $200.
could someone please let me no wot they are like (any of the FX's), and if i'm doing teh right thing here.
o - mite add, my main use for pc is games, internet, and wacthing movies.
Cheers

142831 2003-05-10 08:08:00 Well according to The Register the FX 5800 has just flopped due to Nvidia's low sales or something, now its being replaced with the NV35....

As for the 5200 i have yet to see any benchmarks for it, but apparently its aimed at the low end up market, should be slightly better performance than the current GF4MX ones. Plus it should play doom 3 :)

that link should help you out, i personaly don't know a lot about them.
Note while DD says it will run doom3 it doesn't mean it will run good. I think the FX card have hardware rendering for DX 8 or 9 whereas the MX have the rendering for DX 7. so in that way they will run faster.

142833 2003-05-10 10:24:00 Personally I won't be getting a GF FX. If I was to get a card now I'd be getting a Ti4200 (price reasons) or an ATi card. The ATIs at the moment are miles ahead of nVidia.

Though I do know someone with a 5200 and he upgraded from a GF2 of some description and finds it A LOT faster.

142837 2003-05-10 21:34:00 ok, thanks for all that.
i've been looking around the links u have gave me, i see tht the 5200 is the budget version of the FX's.
would i be better off (in the long run) be spending more and getting a 5200 Ultra??
or, will the GF4 Ti prices drop - and get one of those?
also, someone mentioned something about ATi's cards - i've never had anything to do with them - i never read articles about them or anything - its like i don't want to no about them.... :( - would i be better off getting one of them?
if so, what models (as i said, i don't no anything about them)
cheers

142838 2003-05-10 23:27:00 ok, i've found a few prices, and would like your opinions here:
I plan to purchase a vid card that will last me about a year and a half, and be able to play the lastest games, i don't want to go over $250 - cheaper is better.
GeForce4 MX440 128Mb $122
Radeon 9100 128Mb $200
GeForce FX 5200 128Mb $200
GeForce3 Ti500 64Mb $215
GeForce4 Ti4200 64Mb $250

wot would be my best bit (considering i have a GF2 MX400 64mb at moment)
Thank you
