142636 2003-05-09 04:58:00 I cannot establish a connecdtion to MSN Messenger through my Tertiary institution. It seems they have shut down certain ports to prevent us from chatting. Does anyone know a way around this? jerry_23 (3745)
142637 2003-05-09 05:02:00 Try a Proxy server on an Un-Blocked PC?

Just a lil side-note - Does anybody know of some software to Scan for the address of a Proxy on a LAN?

142638 2003-05-09 05:05:00 Actually, come to think of it, you may be able to use ANY proxy server... find an ISP (Any one will do) that runs a proxy, and have a look on their website to see if they have posted the details of it and how to connect to it!

MSN works with HTTP and SOCKS proxies :-)

142639 2003-05-09 05:08:00 As a I know from experience (e.g. my mums work etc...) there is not much you can do to get around this, give Chilling_Silently idea a shot, but I do not think you can bypass it.

Good luck.

142640 2003-05-09 05:10:00 i've done almost everything to do with http, socks 4 & 5 and proxy settings, but it seems that the institute have blocked the port numbers that MSN messenger operate on! jerry_23 (3745)
142641 2003-05-09 05:15:00 i have read that it may be possible for MSN messenger to piggyback on the hotmail port settings, has anyone got any thoughts on this? jerry_23 (3745)
142642 2003-05-09 05:16:00 From personal Experience, MSN Messenger does not like using an HTTP Proxy Server, however it does handle SOCKS 5 proxy servers ok providing it has authentication details... - give that a try.
The problem with using a public proxy is that most are either HTTP or HTTP and FTP only...

However, aside from this, I would say that MSN Messenger would be blocked for legitimate reasons and therefore should stay blocked...

142643 2003-05-09 05:16:00 Even across the LAN?
You could see about a Proxy server that uses a different port number?
