142925 2003-05-10 20:02:00 I have decided to buy a new 19 inch monitor. I am looking at the two Auriga models, the Hansol 920 P and the viewsonic E 90.
I would appreciate opinions of these from anyone who owns one.
Also any others. If you reccomend anything else please mention a supplier who stocks them
I mighr add I don't play games or need any 3d. Mostly used for script. I want a Very good contrast between black and white. (Poor eyesight).
Thanks all,
Jack

There's a shop in Tauranga that's selling a second hand 21" Compaq screen for about $599 or something... it's an excellent screen (I have the same model at work) and if I could afford it (and my wife would let me) I'd buy it :)

142927 2003-05-11 02:03:00 you don't mention where you are so i can't really recommend a local supplier but i dove electronics are agents for Veiwsonic. www.dove.co.nz give them a call and they will proberly recommend a retailer for you :)

i'm a veiwsonic fan myself (i have an E95) the flatscreen ver is better but you get what you pay for. the G90f is almost twice the pice of the E95.

142928 2003-05-11 07:35:00 AOC is a good cheap brand. Not the best but you get what you pay for with them. If you're wanting it mainly for text I think an LCD would be a very good choice.

When it comes to the outright best though I don't think you can really turn down a Sony Trinitron if it weren't for the price associated with them. I'd be looking at a Samsung, Hyundai or Philips. All flat screens of course.

142929 2003-05-11 08:52:00 Like JM says, if you are needing a monitor specifically for text then your best option is to go for a LCD monitor. Our very experienced Godfather here swears by LCD monitors and does not like to use "normal" ones now. They are excellent for text, he believes.

The other advantage of them is their space saving - a 15" LCD has similar screen size to a 17" CRT. They are more pricey for good ones, however.

142930 2003-05-11 09:28:00 For poor eyesight, you would need to test an LCD prior to purchase.

While I believe they are superior they will only be so in their "native" resolution, which for a 15" (similar viewable size to 17") is 1024 x 768.

If you normally run at 800 x 600 for larger display of text, icons etc then they will not be suitable.

My screens have a contrast ratio of about 300:1 to 400:1 but its the absolute crispness of the text I like. Some expensive Sony LCD's can achieve 3000:1 !!

My primary monitor is digitally driven (DVI) and 1 pixel is exactly mapped as 1 pixel.
In an analog CRT monitor, 1 pixel is an arbitrary thing which depends on how fast the beam can be turned on and off, and on the shadow mask alignment.

Thats my $0.02 worth anyway.
