142916 2003-05-11 02:46:00 Can you access the BIOS setup before Windows boots up? NEC might be like many others, and put the BIOS setup as a programme on the hard disk. If so, do an F8, and boot to DOS. Then "dir *setup*.* /s" might find a suitable setup programme. That should let you check the mouse assignment.

I assume you have tried everything possible in the Windows "Mouse" page. ;-)

It might jog someone's memory if you tell us the model of the laptop.

142917 2003-05-11 05:25:00 I would suggest the following:

Enter the BIOS and check the COM port is enabled, typically COM1

If it is a non standard mouse it may require an additional driver.

You could also try start > settings > control panel > add new hardware.

For the trackball it may require drivers and for that I would contact the manufacturer of the make/model in question or provide the make/model exactly and i will see if i can help

142918 2003-05-11 07:35:00 I had a similar problem and it was the mouse thing that goes into the computer. the pins had bent. When this guy fixed it, hey presto, and you have to be sure you plug it in the right way.
Have you checked if your mouse has packed a sad?

142919 2003-05-11 08:48:00 You have done the obvious, haven't you -- given the mouse a good clean inside? Sometimes you need to look very closely for tiny bits of fluff stuck to the little rollers inside and clean them off. Susan B (19)
142920 2003-05-11 12:38:00 Thanks for the replies, people. Yes I have done all the obvious. The mouse has died, and I know that somewhere in windows (95) there is a check list where I can select to activate the trackball. Trouble is, I cannot remember where I found it last time!!! I specifically want to reactivate the track ball. I purchased the laptop 2nd hand, and am not sure of the exact model. Thanks again. mariekirkwood (1132)
142921 2003-05-11 17:37:00 To find out system info i would suggest this program:
www.aida32.hu

or sisoft sandra from download.com

also you can go by the details/codes when you first start the computer by writing them down and looking them up on the net.

142922 2003-05-12 02:30:00 Right, Marie. Start | Settings | Control Panel | should get you there. Graham L (2)
