However if you're watching how much you download per month, make sure you know what day the billing starts and finishes each month, cause it doesn't necessarily start on the first day and end on the last day of the month. Then there is no way of finding out what speed you are downloading at...The connection icon only shows the amoutn of packets being sent/recieved through the LAN. So whats a program that tells the speed and logs it??? |

If you are with Xtra, go to selfservice.xtra.co.nz and login to determine how much bandwidth you have used on the current billing cycle, if you use another ISP they probably have similar. Iain |

Bandwidth is an amplitude/freqency or power/frequency relationship, ie a frequency range in which the amplitude doesnt vary by more than a specified amount. What is really meant here is just counting the data download in MB and comparing with the allowed download cap. Sorry to be pedantic :) |

| 143112 | 2003-05-11 12:59:00 | Yes Chill, I suppose so, crudely speaking, data flow in bits/second is determined by the bandwidth but isnt the bandwidth itself. That is, a certain system bandwidth is required to be able to get a given data rate. Have a look at Mikes reply he said bandwidth was set by the ISP, ie 128Kbps for Jetstream starter, and then he talked about amount downloaded. Think of an audio amplifier having a amplitude response that is flat within +/- 3db from 20Hz to 20000Hz, and outside that range it rapidly falls off. Or consider the bandwidth of an am radio station 9KHz, compared with VHF TV which may have a bandwidth of 5MHz (a guess). Tremendously more information can be sent over the TV audio and video than an am radio station. Gee Im certainly in a funny mood tonight, think I should go to bed :) |
