143239 2003-05-12 07:20:00 Graham L, or anyone else that knows about these things. If the 2 wire system is more preferable to the older 3 wire system, is it possible to convert a 3 wire system to a 2 wire system without replacing all the extension sockets? Can the mastersocket be modified by taking off the capacitors? And if I was to rewire our house is any particular cable better to use? Andrew B (867)
143240 2003-05-12 07:42:00 Best cable is cat5, because it is 4 twisted pairs (3 spare), and i'd just use 2 wire sockets, or better still just use pin 2+5 on the exsisting ones, cutting any crap you find off unless you had a phone that actually needs a ringer.

143241 2003-05-12 10:00:00 Thanks Clueless, so are you saying, to convert a 3 wire system to a 2 wire system, replace existing sockets with 2 wire sockets, or just use existing 3 wire sockets, but only connect to pins 2+5 ?

Does the mastersocket need any modification?

Can you please define "cutting off any crap you find" Are you referring to crap in the 3 wire ext socket, or otherwise.

With thanks..

143242 2003-05-12 10:31:00 In a 2 wire system there is no such thing as a Master socket .

The purpose of the Master in a 3 wire setup is to produce the ringing line .

In 2 wire there is no ringing line

Therefore you could remove all components on the Master (but I would leave any surge arrestors), or simply buy all 2 wire sockets .

143243 2003-05-12 10:50:00 Some of the replys aren't quite correct. You can mix 2 and 3 wire jacks,(not supposed to but we do it all the time.)As long as it is the secondary jacksyou can just do straight swap on that jack.If it's the master, then you have to do all the jacks,as the other phones won't ring otherwise. If you swap a 3 for a new 2 wire, you only need to use the 2 wires, and the phone will ring fine.On the 3 wire the wires are:red on 2,white on 5,and blue on 4,if you have any other jacks. If you cut all the "crap" off the master,it will still work, only now as a secondary,so unless there is a master somewhere else in the circuit, that phone won't ring.Apart from that there is no great advantage changing to a 2 wire system,if everything is working fine now.It can help though,on slower internet connections, and also in areas where there are problems with RF interference(the blue wire acts as an aerial).

143245 2003-05-12 20:33:00 Peter,
I'm confused here. I'm down to 7 phones now. There once was 12. They are various models, all scored at garage sales they all work and ring, and they all only use pin 2 + 5 only.

143246 2003-05-13 02:04:00 The old secondary sockets are fine . Just use the 2 & 5 connectors . I suppose you could snip the bell wire from pin 4 in the master one, or just use a 2 wire or spare secondary one . The advantage of the Master socket is that it has a gas-discharge protector across the line . I assume the modern termination blocks ouside the hous include one, so if you haven't got that .

The existing NZPO wire will probably be OK, Chris, as long as it is twisted pair . The "bell wire" they sometimes used should be replaced . :D

The only reason for rewiring would be if some of the sockets are "star connected" rather than in a straight one-to-one sequence .

However, since you've got cable and the phones presumably work, why fix it?

The "official" improvement was that the capacitor (1 . 8 uF) from one side of in series with the quite low resistance of the bell coils impaired the balance of the line . This could affect any "fast" modem anywhere inside the installation . ADSL will be connected at the point of entry, and the filter will give you a 2-wire output only .
