143270 2003-05-11 22:55:00 I have acquired an old Toshiba 660cdt laptop which has a dud cd-rom drive. Is there some way I can transfer programmes (too large for a floppy) from my desktop to the laptop. Also, do you leave the battery inserted when not using it portable?. What is the "Fn" key for it doesn't seem to do anything. As you will have gathered I know nothing about laptops and any help will be appeciated. Pato (2463)
143271 2003-05-11 22:59:00 Yes, I would suggest that you setup a home LAN/Network.
Check the Networking FAQ for more information.

You could always use WinZip to 'span' the file/s across Multiple Disks!

The 'Fn' key is the Function key, hold it down and press one of the other keys with similar writing to the Fn label (Usually it might be blue text).

Hope this helps

Cheers

A full user guide for the 660cdt is downloadable from Toshiba Portege 660cdt Users Guide (cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com).

Cheers, Babe.

143274 2003-05-12 01:06:00 if your other pc is on windows xp, try the file transfer wizard (you will need a null modem cable) beama (111)
143275 2003-05-12 01:42:00 You can use a Null-Mode cable to do transfers with ANY Windows OS.

Im not too sure if you can mix and match different OS's, but I always just use FX.. simple.. easy.. it does the trick :-)

143276 2003-05-12 05:05:00 if I remember correctly xp gives you the ability to make a program on disk which is transferred to the non xp machine to do this. Not sure though if one machine has to be xp. beama (111)
143277 2003-05-12 05:41:00 Thanks for your help. I should have said I am using Win98SE on the Desktop. Excuse ignorance but what is a NULL-MODE cable?. Can it be bought made-up?. How do you use it?. THANKS. Pato (2463)
