143229 2003-05-11 11:45:00 Could someone please explain the difference between 2 wire & 3 wire phone circuits? I had a look at one of the phone outlets, a 6 core 3 pair incoming, red, blue & white connected. Does the "Age" of the telephone exchange equipment determine whether 2 or 3 wire phones??? Thanks Poppa John We are 06 for Wanganui. Poppa John (284)
143230 2003-05-11 12:13:00 From my limited memory, Red and White are the actual "line" from the exchange while blue (being the ringer circuit) is generated from one side of the Line via a capacitor in the master socket.

Most modern equipment does not need a separate ringer curcuit

Its nothing to do with exchange equipment. Only 1 pair comes from the exchange anyway, for each line.

The blue ringer circuit is generated from one wire of the pair (don't know if its mate is the red or white though), thru a capacitor at the Master socket, to tap off the 16.666 Hz ringer AC for the rest of the house.

You can get problems if you put a 2 wire socket onto a 3 wire system. as it shorts out the ringer circuit for the rest of the house.

On a 2 wire circuit, the ringing function is internal to the phone.

So its the age of the phone equipment in the house that determines the need for 2 or 3 wire.

Modem leads only have 2 wires for instance, they ignore the ringing line if its there, as do most recent phones.

143231 2003-05-11 12:24:00 As an aside, which I mentioned a while ago, and it may affect some people, the Dynalink adsl filters dont support older 3 wire phones like the STC fawn coloured "Pert" touch tone phones.
I had to add an internal ringer capacitor to our old phones when we went to Jetstream.

143236 2003-05-12 02:25:00 The "line" connections are pins 2 and 5 of the socket . The third wire on pin 4 carries the "ringing" power for traditional bells (the sort which toll, rather than "beep" .

If you want all the gory details, have a look at PTC 200 . (You can find a link by entering "PTC" to the PressF! search, and selecting the ADFSL microfilter thread) .

3-wire systems use a master socket as the first, and secondary sockets for the rest . Master sockets have a gas discharge lightning protector and a capacitor and resistor which feed the separate ringing wire and give a standard termination for line testing from the exchnage .

2 wire systems, which are recommended for use with modems, and are the standard now, just use the two wires from the exchange straight through . (The 2 wire sockets seem to have all the 1,2,3 pins and 2, 4, 5 shorted together) An old phone with a bell won't ring on a 2 wire system .
