143069 2003-05-11 02:26:00 Hey
I've just recently installed Linux RedHat 9 in one of my times of stupidity, and I've got a few questions I'd like to get answered.

1) I'm dual booting with XP Pro, on XP Pro's E: Drive (which is just a Fat32 partition) are the drivers for my modem so I can install them under Linux. Knoppix Mounts the drive ok, but I can't seem to do this in RedHat - could someone please help
2) As I'm often away from my computer more than I should be, is there a power saving feature in Linux I can use to put the computer into either suspension or hibernation after X Minutes?
3) How does one get into his MSN Messenger account under Linux? I've already had a look in the Messenger Proggy that came installed, but that only supports ICQ...
4) How do I run Samba and maintain it - I selected it to be installed during the installation process, but can't seem to get into it. Also, how do I share specific folders across the whole network without the need for a username and pwd?

Just remember I'm new at this game, so please try not to confuse me any more than I already am - step by step instructions would be very much appreciated

Thanks for the help

I haven't used rh9, but you should find it mounted under /mnt/windows or similar.

There is suspend support, I don't know about hibernation. But I don't know of a way to have it run on a timer. On most distros you need to have root access to suspend for security reasons.

I'm using kmess which comes with KDE3.

If you install the SWAT package it will add a web based interface. To use it mandrake theres a link under configuration/network, otherwise browse to http://localhost:901/

To get rid of the user/pass stuff set the security level to "share" (under global options in SWAT).

143071 2003-05-11 03:52:00 apmd to Google will lead you to the people who do the power management software. You might even have documentation in your system. ;-) Try "apropos apmd" , "info apmd", "man apmd" in a text console window. Graham L (2)

Thanks guys - I managed to get the drive mounted ok - there's a link posted by E.ric in the Faq of Linux Howto and that was a god-send. Now I have the problem of the modem.
The modem is on COM3 which relates to something like /ttyS02, anyway, whenever I select the modem in KPPP it says that the modem is busy. After installing the modem drivers, there is now /dev/modem in the list as well. However, when I select that modem, it says that the modem is not responding... bugger huh?
Oh well...
I'll keep plodding along trying to get this stupid modem to work under Linux

Thanks

143073 2003-05-11 04:34:00 When you get that "modem is busy" message, it means that there is a leftover "lock" file. Have a look at the /var/locks directory. It won't hurt to delete the culprit.

The /dev/modem "device" is actually a link (alias) to the actual /dev/ttyS02 which has been detected. (COMx is "1-relative,", *nix device numbers are 0-relative). The link is so that each piece of software which might need the devicee can know to use /dev/modem.

143074 2003-05-11 05:38:00 What kind of modem is it?

If its a winmodem then its faking COM3 in windows and won't show up on ttyS* because they are for actual serial ports. The connexant ones show up as ttySHCF0 (or HSF).

/dev/modem is a soft-link (like a shortcut in windows). You can check where is pointing by bringing up the properties on it in the filemanager.

A good place to look to check if the driver is loading correctly is in your system log (/var/log/syslog). Its a text file so you can open it with a text editor. Linux doesn't load most drivers until it needs them so they should at the bottom.

Thanks! It's a conexant HCF Modem so I'll take a looksie next time I've booted back into linux (which will be soon).
I've deleted the /var/locks files and the same resulted has happened - so I'll try bmason's advice. I have the ambitious hopes of viewing PressF1 through Linux and Mozilla before I knock off tonight...
As for samba, that's on the hold at the moment, however it is running! I can connect to it via smbclient in a terminal, however am yet to manage to get it running via a web-based interface...
I have created a username/password file for it though through the terminal - I have a copy of RedHat8 for dummies which I'm using as a guide for stuff like that - although it's usually just me playing and learning.

Thanks

143076 2003-05-11 06:58:00 Nope...
No luck with ttySHCF0 - it doesn't come up in the list of modems available, and doesn't work when I type it in - Case sensitive I know.
I'm going to put it down to a bad case of a Winmodem

143077 2003-05-11 07:58:00 I had one working fine with mandrake 8 thru 9.1.

Did you follow the instructions and run the setup programme after you installed the RPM?

When its installed correctly it will set /dev/modem to point to ttySHCF0, so you can tell kppp etc to use /dev/modem.
