2003-05-13 08:08:00 | Was wondering how often should you make a backup of your important files/folders/photos that are on your computer? The last time i did a back up (burning onto CD) was probably in October last year. Is this good or bad? I reckon its bad, because what if my computer was struck by lightning tomorrow (highly unlikely, i know!! :D) and all my new files/folders/photos were irretrievable? cheers, caffy

2003-05-13 08:13:00 | It all depends how important it is. I quite frankly havent backed up in around a year.. yet Ive formatted my doze partition multiple times, and my linux one at the same time once or twice too... I have 3 HDD's in my PC though, and I can transfer it from Knoppix across the LAN to another PC should something go REAL wrong. Weekly is good usually.. especially with Nero, and a Multi-Session Disc, it can be set to only burn the changed or new documents/files! Hope this helps Cheers Chill.

2003-05-13 08:49:00 | Hi Caffy Imagine if tomorrow you turned your PC on and found the hard drive had died without warning (it does happen)? Hardware failure and not lightning strikes is the greatest risk you take if your important files are not backed up regularly. The best thing to do is keep all you important (irreplaceably) files all in one or two folders - that way when you burn a copy to CD you don't need to hunt all over the hard drive to find the files. It is definitely a case of once bitten, twice shy when you lose data. Cheers Jen

2003-05-13 08:54:00 | i have a Norton Ghost image of the whole HDD each time I have a diff windows. Come on .. this is once a time per windows. Saves u time to reinstall windows and office and u don't have to re-register. I have a CDRW drive and I do routine backups of my personal files only. I normally excl bookmarks and webfiles. Some times i include when i can be bothered. I sometimes use a network drive instead if its jus temporary. This type of backup I do like every 2 weeks at least. I have learnt from experience. Some one on the forum may provide u with a technique tat can copy only data after a specific date to the CDRW or folder?? ?:| I also have a second paritition in FAT32 to store the files in case when NTFS stuff up. | 143709 | 2003-05-13 08:59:00 | From experience i have seen the hardware are not so reliable with the past. I have a hard drive died and it was just 1.2yr old. It was even a laptop hdd. Yep it hurts. Fortunately I was able to reinstall windows and retrieve the files off the NTFS hdd. More freq its the corruption of data. What happens if ur login gets corrupted?? Or NTFS simply does not boot up?? One time i installed the wrong s/w for a older cdrw and it locked me out. It corrupted the boot up files.

2003-05-13 09:06:00 | Jen C... That's exactly what happened to me. Amazingly I had just done a full backup onto my friends system, the next morning I turned on the computer and the laptop hard-drive failed completely. I took it into Compaq and was told that the drive would have to be taken out and sent to Singapore for repair and for me to get my data back would take some serious cash. Fortunately I have all my personal stuff encrypted anyway and so I wasn't concerned. But that was a real wake up call for me and so I went straight down and bought a CD writer to do regular backups. I also have an image of everything on the hard-drive as insurance so only need to backup the stuff I keep in particular folders. So I can't stress enough the importance of regular backups. Think to yourself, "Can I afford to loose what I have at the moment", and if the answer is no - start the backup process. Cheers PF1 :-)

2003-05-14 21:09:00 | About every month or so though i have about 80% of all my mp3s utils applications movies etc on cdrs so I can reinstall if needed. I also use Powerquest Drive IMage so have a drive image of my C: drive on cdr plus on another HDD for security so can do a complete reinstall in about 10 mins onto any HDD if I should need to do so in the future
