143619 2003-05-13 05:00:00 I have been runnig XP-pro for about a year and have had no problems untill now .

the setup was a 40Gb drive on the primary IDE as master
a 8GB drive on the primary as slave .

I removed the 8Gb drive from my system . (it had linux on it)

when i booted the system the lilo boot loader went mental .

I boot off the XP cdrom and did a fixmbr and a fix boot .

the system will boot and run fine if i select "last knowen good config"

if i select "normal boot" the system hangs and the XP splash screen .

info:
athlon 1800+
256Mb ram
soltek 75kav5 board
XP pro (service pack 1)

only change was to unplug one drive .

any help would be nice .

143620 2003-05-13 05:11:00 Use a boot disk/floppy and type'' fdisk /mbr '' at the prompt, leave a space between the k and / Shiloh (2288)
143621 2003-05-13 05:35:00 My previous post may not help as it seems it is booting to xp, I had this problem a few weeks ago with it hanging at the splash screen at boot ,
I selected ''debugging mode'' instead of ''last known good configuration'' and it fixed the problem. or you could use your boot disk and run scandisk or chkdisk.

143622 2003-05-13 06:26:00 Doesn't XP have a Recovery Console which does repairing of the MBR? If so, I would suggest that rather than any bootable floppy and FDISK /MBR. Graham L (2)
143623 2003-05-13 06:28:00 PS: Next time, before removing a Linux disk which uses LILO for boot management. Do "lilo -u" in your last Linux session. That will restore the MBR which lilo saved when it was installed. Graham L (2)
143624 2003-05-13 11:19:00 I have use the Recovery Console and tryed "fixmbr" and "fixboot"

this fixed the lilo problem but window wont boot unless i select "last knowen good config"

143625 2003-05-13 12:31:00 fixed it

I changed the boot.ini to get a boot log and was hoped to see what was stalling.

rebooted and the system came up first time.

problem is fixed but i dont quite know how/why........
